Gents,

Looking for a stag whittler with 1095 (or some other carbon blade that is easy to sharpen and that will develop a patina [CV?!]) blades and plain bolsters. Ideally, under 4 inches.

The Queen stag whittler is ideal but I am put off by D2; I'd like to be able to sharpen on my Arkansas stone and I'd like the patina to come more readily. Love the swell center, though.

Boker's whittlers really appeal to me but their stag offering has fancy bolsters that I don't care for (and the cost is rather off-putting). I do like the shape of the handle.

I wish GEC did whittlers in the 3.5 inch range. The cuban whittler is nice but I'd like something with curves.

Isn't it amazing that its so hard to find a good carbon Whittler?! I am in your boat too. IMHO whittlers should always be carbon. I never met a wood carver that used anything but carbon. You may find something vintage like a j.a. Henckles 3" whittler. Let us know what you decide on.

the good old hen & rooster, henckels,& schrade are available but these along with the great roebsons are mostly collector items. if you are willing to pay the price they are avaliable .i think boker still cataloges a carbon model.

AG Russell has a fine, small (3 1/8") Stag handled Whittler: http://www.agrussell.com/ag-russell-stag-medium-stockman/p/RUShhhUS93S/
steel is BG-42 so does not fit your criteria, but i have the similar Stockman and overall quality is excellent. (better than the Case/Bose Collabs for example and much less expensive). i too like 1095, but have a few BG-42 blades and they edge hold very well. great knife steel IMO.
i did read a couple of posts in which posters felt the 3 1/8" size felt too small in hand, but for some it might be just right.

It was from Collectorknives.net, actually, that I got this one when looking around for a knife with specs similar to what you listed. A Bulldog brand 3½" swell center whittler, made by Queen Cutlery, with 1095, stag and nickel silver. Unfortunately it was only a 100 piece run from 2008 and I got the last one Mike had. Pretty nice little knife all in all.

frakki that whit. is exactly what i think of when i think whit.many consider this is the most difficult to produce.

Yeah it's kind of clever with the two tapered back springs that work the blades. I don't think I could very easily file and rivet one together if given the individual pieces in a plastic bag. :D

frankkithat's exactly what i'm looking for. the one queen makes now is D2. grrrrr.

Don't forget German Eye

God Bless

I ended up ordering that one with carbon blades instead of the stainless. I love the match strike pulls and the "eye" shield.

Now the wait!

The search has me hankering for the Bulldog wharncliffe whittler with carbon blades and stag handles AND a GEC Melon Tester.

SOMEBODY STOP ME.

Congrats, although Eye is not known for their f&f. However, they are supposed to make the best carbon steel blades in slipjointdom.

God Bless

kido wholaughs you are right on about the carbon blades in eye brand. i had the alloy compo. for some time but lost the paper.

I have one of the Bulldog carbon whittlers and am pretty disappointed in the weak spring strengh. Not a bad looking knife though. If Case came out with a cv whittler they would sell a ton of them.

As above, it is often stated that the fit & finish of Eye Brand knives is quite variable. this held me back from acquiring any for some time, but in the last 3 years i have picked at least 20 or so. Fit & Finish on all is very good.
my 99S-DS, a 4 5/8" Stag handled 'Sod Buster' with Drop point and Saw blades is a much used, much loved, fantastic, tough, edge holding knife. out of thousands of knives, it remains one of my very favorites and one i will not part with until i am gone.

Red shield Henckels actually pretty affordable & are their carbon blade model, IIRC. I believe they're made by Boker, too.

I bought a German Eye whittler in dark brown jigged bone. Man, wish I held out for the stag, that looks pretty nice! Mine is in their 4034 stainless steel (I picked it off ebay, thought I was buying carbon...). However, even though it isn't carbon, their stainless holds a real nice edge, even while carving.

Only real downside is I sharpen with stones, so it is scratched all to heck
