just got a starmate and while i love the design, the blade looks like it missed the final polishing process - i have talked w/several other forumites, and called the guy i got the knife from to look at his remaining stock, and they all look rough -if ya have a starmate, does your blade exhibit grind marks deep eough enough to feel w/your thumb?? what gives with this????? again love the knife, and can live w/it, but just seems odd......

oh i agree, doesnt affect performance one iota, but i wonder WTF is the deal, why not polish them on out like every other spydie? this is an expensive knife....

PS - an expensive knife i like very much, even w/the funky grind lines...

I think part of it might be that many of the CPM steels won't take as fine a surface finish as AUS-8 and ATS-34, and some of the other steels Spyderco uses, just like D-2 won't really mirror polish.

in general, i thought the popular complaint about the starmate is the "no-frills" aspect of the knife. I have to agree that the knife was put out without having it gone through all the refinements other spydies seem to have. It does feel unfinished in a way, but i think the idea was to have a utility/tactical knife more than an EDC. it's bulky, ugly, and unsightly in an office setting. This is probably a good thing. I have the same grinds in my blade too, but i'm wondering if they were left on purpose just because it cuts down on the reflective signature of the blade. Never gave it too much thought. It still goes with me on my urban outings.

Of course this improvement thread has been beaten around enough, but I still think that the grooves on the blade spine could be more defined (like the military), there should be reeding on the liner lock for easier operation, and the back spacer could be replaced by posts or it could be grooved for a better reverse grip. just my 2 cents. comments anyone?
