My son turns twelve in a few weeks and has asked for a throwing knife for his birthday. Smoky Mountain offers several sets of cheap throwers. I’m curious if these are worth the money? – He loves target sports. I’d like to get him something inexpensive, but worth his time. Can anyone here make a recommendation?

Thanks!

One of the most common inexpensive, but good quality throwing knives around is the Cold Steel True Flight Thrower.
The one on the SMKW website is the new 1055 blade, which won’t hold an edge as well as the old Carbon V steel, but will be about as tough a knife as you can get.
Just remember that it’s carbon steel and should be dried/oiled regularly.

As others stated, the cold steel true flight is good as are the hibbens.A 12 year old can definintly throw the larger knives, but I think the small or med sized knives would work better, build more confidence etc.

I bought a set of 3 hibbens a couble years ago,and they are fine in my opinion, still holding up fine.

Thanks, Gents.

I went with the 8.5" Hibbens. Seem like a good size, weight and price for a 12 yo hands. The scabbard is a nice touch, too. If he gets the hang of it I'll move him in to the larger Cold Steel TFT.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Just know that he CS True Flight has a RAZOR sharp edge. Its a foot long. By all means, grind off the edge before you put it in the hands of a 12 year old.

Also, I'm not a fan of the knife. Its the only knife I own that I struggle with (I do no-spin). The cord handle fell off after a week. I would recommend the Cold Steel Mini Flight thrower. Its cheaper and safer.

On the other hand, as a good, light camp knife, the true flight can't be beat. You can get it for $15 with a sheath!
