Stellite versus Talonite?

Hi,

I am going to buy a Mayo Talonite folder. I have had a Hinerer Stellite Firetac before and I found the Stellite to be a great material. What do you think about Talonite versus Stellite? I know that it has been written a lot about the subject but I have still a problem to understand the difference. Mr Mayo told me that Stellite is harder but I have also red that Talonite makes a stronger edge.

Any thoughts?

Thank you!

Stellite and Talonite are both cobalt based alloys. The name Talonite is used to differentiate one alloy from 20+ different Stellite alloys. Either alloy works great when used for its intended purposes. Both alloys are bad if used incorrectly.

Trust Tom to help you make your decision.

Ossian, both materials are very similar, and in my opinion, you can't go wrong with either one as long as you aren't going to use the knife hard. The only significant difference that I know of from a usage standpoint between the two materials is that Stellite 6K is a little bit harder, so it will hold an edge a bit better, and Talonite is a little bit tougher, so it will be a little less likely to chip out if you do cut something hard.

If you are going to use the knife hard, though, I would recommend using a steel rather than a cobalt-based alloy. But if you like the Stellite in your Firetac, I think you will be happy with the Talonite in your TNT as well.

Thank you for the answers!

Yes, Tom is the expert I guess but I am not going to order a knife from him – wish it was possible though. The knife is already made of Talonite. It sounds interesting that Talonite is tougher. Maybe will it take a thinner edge than Stellite. I really liked Stellite for EDC use and I still not know way I sold the Firetac. The only thing I had against it was the thick edge.

Thanks!

Ossian, I would not recommend putting a thinner edge on Talonite than what you would do with Stellite 6K. Because Talonite is softer than the 6K, a thinner edge will deform more easily. From my own personal experience using it, for the best low maintenance edge with Talonite, I would recommend a little bit thicker of an edge.
