A few weeks ago there was a thread on this forum comparing handmade knives to classical works of art. Tonight, while browsing Tim Herman's website I followed a link to Steve J. Lindsay's site. I have seen some of his work in pictures, but until I had the opportunity to see the detailed close-ups on his site I had no idea how incredible this man's work really is.

With respect to classical works of art, I think everybody would agree that Steve Lindsay's work is some of the most beautiful rendering of metal that this world has ever seen. It is absolutely incredible!

Those of you who are unfamiliar with his work, please, do yourself a favor and check out the pictures on his site. You won't believe your eyes!

Two of my favorites:
- Lindsay-Lindsay #5
- Ron Lake stag lockback with raised sculptured gold inlay engraving

I just had to share this link with all of you. It really is some of the most incredible work I've ever seen and I know you guys will appreciate its beauty as much as any connoiseur.

Go get a bib and a paper towel, and enjoy the pics.

I totally agree with you... Steve Lindsay's work is some of the finest engraving I have ever laid eyes on!

I stumbled across his site about a year ago, and I was almost in shock... His work is beyond extraordinary!

The next time I run into Tim in the chat room, I asked him if he was familiar with Steve's work, and it turned out that the two of them are friends.... I have since talked to Tim quite a bit about Steve's work... As a matter of fact, we were speaking about him during the Blade Show....

Since it's not my place to say anything, I won't tell you that Tim and Steve may have a custom project in the works...

Tim actually credits Steve with much of his own knowledge in the field of engraving. Apparently Steve taught him a thing or two once upon a time. But Tim's no slouch either. His color engraving is really something as well.

I can't wait to see what those two come up with.

Dave Ellis here-I just received my S.R. Johnson Pearl Loveless style Big Bear back from Steve Lindsay-The finished product is absolutely awe-inspiring!! Jim Weyer just shot it and it should apear in Points of Interest 6.
When I am able to take a digital photo to do it justice I will send to Gus Kalanzis to post,I believe that Steve Johnson has photo's of it on his site and Lindsay has some action shots of my knife being engraved by him.

Wow. This guy is really talented!

I liked the Busfield raised engraving the best of all the scrollwork, and most enjoyed the bulino-type engraving of the animals on Steve Hoel's knives. They look damn near as realistic as photos. That isn't easy to do using stippling.

Funny, but just last evening was reading from one of the elderly knife magazines I recently acquired, and there was a feature on Hoel. I think the mag was from 1991. His stuff looked so good, I had trouble understanding why I've never come across his name before. Is he still alive and well and making beautiful knives?

Thanks, Wulf, for sharing the links!

thank you all for the kind words. Steve and i have been friends for many years and in my humble opinion he is the best in the world. some of the ideas and designs he has come up with are simply amazing. he is now also making availabe to other engravers his own patented design AirGravers that are absolutely the best tools made for the fine banknote shading. i have been using them now for a while and talk with Steve every week and he keeps refining the designs. i will have a couple of the tools at the Guild show in orlando. you can see more about them on Steve's airgraver.com site.
bugs3x, Steve Hoel is still making knives and i was fortunate enould to spend a week in his shop years ago and learned a ton about making lockback interframes. he is one i have looked up to for many years and am proud to say he is a great friend, as is Steve Lindsay.

I stumbled across Steve's work a few months ago. It turns out I grew up down the street from Steve. His father was also a talented man in the jewelry business mostly as I remember it.

His work is nothing short of increadible!

The engraver I use (Tiz Pozzobon www.engravingarts.com ) says that Steve is the best in the business

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Martin Butler who does extraordinary work usually for Wolfe Loerchner. Also theres a guy named Joe Rundell who I don't know much about but if anyone has POI Book 4 turn to page 169 and you'll find one of the most intricate engraving jobs I've seen.An engraved folding knife fit into 6 different metal panels, all totally engraved and the box lid carved and inlaid. The folded knife fits precisely into the panel and completes the engraved picture.I believe one of the magazines had a picture of this knife by Mike Leach. This has to be seen to be appreciated.
I just realized this should of been put under Who's Your Favorite Engraver. sorry-maybe the moderator can move it.

Recently, I purchased a Steve Johnson, Classic Hunter with elephant ivory scales and engraved by Steve Lindsay. If you are interested, the knife is still pictured under "knives available" at www.srjknives.com.

I just wanted to say that not only are both of these men extremely talented, but they are both very gracious and humble as well. I spoke to them both before I purchased the knife and you would have thought you were talking to your two best friends. When you deal with people like this, it sure makes it easier to write the check.

Thanks for the links. Everytime I look at truly great engraving it just seems like magic to me....incredible...
