Stopping the wiggle...

I usually do hidden tang blades but I'm now in the middle of an experimental design that is a Slab handle.
Question is:What is the best way to secure a blade so I can do the OL "Shoe Shine" sanding with out the blade wiggling around and getting those little "Wiggle mark" Super fine scratches in an otherwise finished blade?

Any suggestions?

A thick piece of sheath leather folded over the blade, rough side next to the blade, clamped tight in a vice seems to work for me.

I use two things Robert. The first is sheet lead. Wrap it around the blade and clamp in a vice. holds better than leather and lasts longer. I also have a knife vice that I made. It holds the knife very securely without damaging the steel.

I'll finish up the blade to the point I want it then
rap it with a paper towel then Use masking tape
and tape it up good.
then I use some rubber vise jaw pads I bought from HF,
works great. all is cheap, easy, and a good grip.:)

There ya go Mike and Graymaker!
I will hit Harbor freight tomorrow, luckily for me they have two here in the Phoenix area:cool:

Good idea Mike,I have been using a Pana vise It seems to work Ok
My have to get me one of those wood vises. What was in the middle of the jaws?
Thanks

After visiting Nick Wheelers shop a couple of us [mostly Bling Dog]made knife vises.

Just took short lengths of pipe and drilled a single hole completely through both walls at one end.

Drilled out the pin on a large gate hinge and glued lrather to the inside faces of the hinge. Bent the hinge faces so there was enough clearance for some leather and a blade when the hinge was closed.

Slid the hinge into the pipe and drove a pin through both walls of the pipe and the hinge.

Drilled a couple holes and welded on nuts at the other end, then screwed bolts with large handles into the nuts.

The vise is now put into a bench vise and toghtened down. The blade goes ito the slot between the open end of the hinge, and the bolts are tightened against the hinge, forcing the leather into a slip-proof grip on the blade.

We also bought HF vises that have swivel jaws, with regular jaws on one face and v jaws on the other.

The pipe is held securely in the v jaws and can be rotated as much as you like.

Builing them took about the same amouint of time as this description.

Please post whatever you end up doing so we can see :)

This is what I have and it works quite well. I got it from Uncle Al

I would recommend gluing some leather or neoprene in the jaws of this knifemaker's vise.

I use some basic sheath made with old tire tube. I have many size for many kinfd off knife, I put the blade into the rubber tube and fix it in my vise...

I just ordered one of these this morning. Glad to hear it works well. It seems to be just the ticket for file work.
