Does anyone own or have handled the Strider "tomahawk" that is based on an ASP collapsible baton? It looks like it would be an interesting and concealable hawk.
Thanks, Kenneth

Yes, I handled one at the Southern California Blades Knife Expo a few months ago. It was cool looking and fun to play with. It locked positively. I imagine that it would be sturdy enough for self defense applications. However, consistent chopping on something like wood would probably loosen the lockup. I know that when I do a heavy bag workout with my ASP, enough pounding will eventually loosen the lockup (and I imagine that a hard target like wood would loosen the lockup more quickly than a semi-soft heavy bag---but I'm just speculating on that).

One of the few things I didn't like about the ASP hawk is that the handle is round and the shaft segments rotate. As a result, unless you look at the hawk when extended, you can't tell by handle feel where the cutting edges are pointing. In other words, it doesn't easily index by feel like my other hawks will do (because they have oval or teardrop shaped handles).

Strider once did a proto of a combat hawk with interchangeable heads/tools. It was quite intriguing but Mick said that the manufacturing cost would simply be too high to give it a market.

Yup, I've got one of those :)

Here it is next to my Lightfoot LCA for size comparo

BTW, Strider did go ahead with their combat axe

The "combat axe" looks pretty cool. However, I can see that they made some significant changes from the early proto that I saw. I'm glad that they figured a way to produce a version of it. Do you know what the cost is and whether it accepts any of the accessories that the original was contemplated to accomodate?

as far as I know, the axe has been out for quite some time..this is the newest version where the bottom of the axe is sharpened (like a sickle)...they were originally priced at $750 but I think they have crept up in price (closer to the $850 mark)...I'm not sure about the accessories but I think someone is making them "aftermarket"

BTW, if you want an axe with "accessories" you might want to check out this one, designed by Joel Pirela and built by Jeff Hall

Man, next time I see Mick at a show, I'm going to have to give him some grief for giving me stale info!

I've got AR #89 and a couple other Strider products, but $850 for the axe seems a bit rough to me.

Another nice hawk I once saw was made by Steve Ryan. Unfortunately, I don't believe he ever got a run of them out and the price of the one existing sample went through the ceiling.

Are you referring to the Ryan axe/fighter set?? :)

I don't want to contradict anything that Mick might have said...all I can say is that I have seen the axes on TAD (and on the boards) for about a year now.

I'm mostly kidding: I'm sure that the reason for the different information is that the older proto I saw was much more complicated and expensive, with many more accessories than the eventual production version.

The Ryan hawk that I saw was a one-off. Steve showed it to me a couple years ago. I understand that last time it sold, it went for about $2500. Makes those Striders look like a bargain!
