Steve, this is a continuation of something we began discussing via PM.

I have received a Strider PT recently and I am considering either passing it on as is or doing some changes to make it a better knife for me.

So I would like to discuss the following items:

First is anodizing the the existing clip and you have already answered this but I 'd like to know what it will take to ano the lock side in addition to the clip. It is that flame stripe finish. It needs the edges rounded to make it a more pocket friendly, but this something I can take care of, it is only a matter of files and sandpaper, but it will take a sand blast (or?) to get in all the nooks and crannies. Let me know the best tools to do this and if it makes sense for me to do it before sending it to you.

Also, can you do different colors when anodizing? For instance, can you do the outside blue and the inside yellow?

Next is blasting the blade. It has the heat treat bead blast stripes just now, I think some other finish would be preferable. Let me know what you can do, Should I go at with the dremel or send it to you? I have no problem hand rubbing a blade, it is just the grooves that look tricky.

I'll be making a new scale for it too. Not sure about materials, except I want to try one in denim.

Let me know thoughts regarding this.

Thanks,

-Todd

Everything but the new scale is a go. I'd be hardpressed to make a solid scale like that all one piece with the spacer.

I would have to cover the detent ball to anodize the lock side to keep it from corroding in the bath. That could lead to some gritty feeling action if not done right.

No guarantee my blasting will remove all the stripes from the blade but most will. I've run into some that for whatever reason I didn't even hardly dent removing them. It was a Zero Tolerance 302 though.

I'll make up the scale. No problem. I'll do it in two pieces or with standoffs, or perhaps both. The stop looks a bit tricky, but I'll make do. I have to figure in a lanyard attachment.

I think the blade might wait to see how it looks with the other work done. I don't mind the stripes for now, but we'll see.

Please Let me know the cost to prep and anodize the clip and lock and that will help me make up my mind.

Was that a yes to the multiple colors?

For just a quick blast and anodizing I'd just need a donation to the refreshment fund so long as it covers shipping back to you and something for me. ;) If its involving blasting the blade and having to resharpen it afterwards it would be more time so then I'd have to add that.

If you plan an open design with stand offs in the rear thats your lanyard right there. Strider should be doing that anyway since thats one of the few flaws in that folder. Simply wrap a stand off and the lanyard missing is a null and void issue. It probably a good spot for one anyway on that far rear one.

Most excellent.

The standoff lanyard attachment is one direction I was going, the other would be to use the rearward of the old clip attachment holes, but that is somewhat more work. We'll see.

As soon as I make up my mind, Ill let you know.

Thanks!

Steve, This one went out to you earlier today. Clip and lock side to be blue jean blue, please.

Also included is a sampler of my products...gold and black fiberglass, blue denim, green and orange denim, carbon/basalt fiber hybrid, and black burlap for your perusal. I don't have whole lot of thin stuff on hand, but I will be happy to make more of anything you need. I'd like to discuss trading these or something similar towards a bustr or two.

No hurries on my end.

Thanks,

-Todd

Ok well, take your time. I'm backlogged a bit at this point in time and moving slow. I'm actually borderline ready to call a halt to any new work for at least till I get some things off the bench and out of the shop. Thanks

I have no problem with you sending back the pt bits if you are not up to it or have too much on your plate. My apologies for not double checking with you first.

Just check out the samples I sent you and keep them under consideration for when you are wanting something different.

Here is what I made of it when I got the frame and clip back from you

I made some denim scales for it, from my own handmade laminate (same stuff I sent you Steve). They are a two piece design copying the factory scales except for forward screw set has a copper standoff to provide for the blade stop. It is just to difficult to copy the factory scale exactly in this area. It is a great idea and a real work saver.

Actually I made two sets, one left flat like the factory scale and the other lightly rounded.

Rounded set installed, the other flat 2 part set with copper standoff below the knife:

I also made up some extra copper standoffs so the option of replacing the denim spacer is available. This is nice because the most rearward standoff, screw set allows for a nice place to attach a lanyard, correcting about the only shortcoming of this knife.

Shown with the flat scale and copper standoffs:

Thanks for your help Steve. I expect to have the rest of that denim mailed to you next week.

No hurry at all on my end. I really like what you did here. Nice job on those. Good idea on using the copper too. I had not thought of that but I like copper and the look it offers. I really like it when it tarnishes a bit. We lined the entire wall behind our wood stove with copper sheeting professionally bent and fitted. It looks better now after being there for 18 years than it did when we first had it done.

Thanks, it was a fun project. I like copper too and and it just seemed to make sense with the denim. It does look better with the patina of age.
