strop - what is it?

A strop is generally a piece of leather, usually either suspended from a hook or mounted to a block, and often charged with very fine abrasives (the most common is .5 micron CrO green rouge).

You can use it to touch up just about any edge, but you'd have to be INSANELY persistent to use it to totally replace (a) stone(s).

A strop is used for refining a sharpened edge after the stones are used. It can then be used for maintaining an edge.

If you truly dull a knife you need to go back to the stones before stropping.

My stops are simply scrap leather from Tandy with white and red polishing compound from Sears crayoned on. Total cost for enough leather for about 4 strops and the two sticks of compound was less than $10.00.

Thanks guys!

what is "Tandy" ? is it a store

Where are you located?

Tandy is a leather craft store. They have online store and physical stores. I bought my leather from one of there physical stores out of a scrap box.

I have read of others using old belts, worn out saddles...for strops.
