ok, well both my ESEE-4 and RC-6 have choils, and i noticed some Esse models have choils and some don't. I love the choils on my 4 & 6, but i have no experience with sub hilts. do they offer the same control and feeling of choking up on the knife while saving blade length? or is it just not the same effect? thanks

Not the same IMO. My perception of the reason for a sub-hilt is for improved grip in thrusting actions. Mostly for fighting knives.
