I can't claim that I have a wide collection of steel types, but I have a couple VG-10 and S30V blades, and I've always sort of associated 154CM in the same group. I'm interested in buying a knife in 154CM for not much more than 100 dollars (less than that is of course preferable). It seems that the vast majority of 154CM knives that I can find are Benchmades. I'm a big Spyderco fan, and I can't really get myself to fall in love with any Benchmade designs, and I'm not a big fan of the Axis lock (heresy?). I sort of like the Mini-Onslaught, but it's a bit more than I want to spend and it has an Axis lock. The Emerson Horseman is also above my budget. The Mini-Grip with the Spyder hole is within budget, but I'm not a fan of the handle or lock. The Manix2 is also in that price range, but it's got that Axis-ish BBL and what I think is over the top jimping.

Can anyone suggest a 154CM knife within my budget (let's say $120 max) that fills a similar role (size/weight/edc purpose) as a Spyderco Sage? The Axis style lock is not exactly a deal-breaker, but I'd have to like the rest of the knife. Thanks for any suggestions.

I think a good tester for 154cm is actually the Gerber Gator, good cheap knife ~$50, I'm sure some searching will find it much cheaper, easy to use easy to abuse and overall a Good buy

Benchmade 707 Sequel is pretty similar to a Mini Griptilian with the drop point blade but has an aluminum handle with G10 inserts instead. That one is actually on my short list.

benchmade barrage 580, though it is 140

definately the best knife i have bought to date and well worth it

ZT 0200. the most manly knife you will own in 154cm.

Agreed. She's sexy.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'd like to keep the blade under 3.5 inches. Is there any other brands that I haven't thought of?

Benchmade 950 Rift. Retail is well over your limit but they pop up on the exchange for under $120 all the time. I love mine

I only know of a couple folders that use 154CM that don't have axis-type locks, the Boker Zirconia which is way above the $120 pricepoint, and the ZT0200 which can be found for about $100 or so. Maybe other more knowledgeable peeps can chime in.

ZT 0200 would be my pick, but you could also do some hunting for an Emerson CQC-7 or an old liner lock Benchmade like the Emerson or AFCK mini.

ZT has already been suggested and they seem to do a good job with 154CM. I'd still suggest trying a 154CM Emerson. He's supposed to do a really good HT on that steel according to people that have used the knives and know something about the HT for knife blades. You might find one on the boards that's in your price range.

Also, IIRC, both Buck and A G Russell have 154CM in a couple of their knives and they should be within your price range.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I think I might have to increase my budget and spring for the Mini-Onslaught or the Horseman. Why doesn't this steel get as much use as VG-10 or S30V?

When I think 154CM, I think Emerson and Benchmade. If you shop hard, you might find one under $120.
