I have not worn non-prescription sunglasses for over 35 years. I had cataract surgery on my left eye last Nov. and my right eye last week. I now have 20/20 vision in both eyes and am currently wearing the sunglasses that they gave me.:thumbdn:

We happened to be at Costco yesterday and we stopped to look at the sunglasses they had. $129, $109, $69  What's the deal with this? They all have plastic frames and plastic lenses. I'm sure that they are better then Foster Grants, but what makes them worth 5 to 10 times the price?

The guy I work for wears nothing but Oakley sunglasses @ $250 and up. I can get good quality prescription sunglasses for less.

I have also seen sunglasses well into 4 figures. Are they really that much better or, as I suspect, are they bought just for the brand name?

Any suggestions in the $50 price range?

i would just to to target or local kmart ect store and fine some on the rack...they are 20$ tops and you wont hate yourself when you lose or break them.

Oakley's & higher range glasses use special polymers and material to make the lenses and frames. Oakley specifically uses a type of rubber that get's tackier when wet, holding better when you're sweating.

It's in the fine details, like a SMF or Sebenza. :)

I like Native sunglasses. They're well made, and if you scratch or lose them, Native will replace them for $30.

You'll usually pay about $100 up front, but I noticed REI has a bunch on sale right now at their online outlet.

you gotta remember 35 yrs. ago the dollar was 5 to 10 times stronger than it is today. Its all relative....I know I still get sticker shock when I buy like a nickel candy for 75 cents today:eek: lol.

Oakleys are the only ones I wear personally. Maui Jim, Spies, Wiley X, and Natives should be good to go as well.

I only wear Bolle. And Sportsmans Guide has them nice and cheap. They are also made so you can put prescription lenses in them. (And they fit around my big head!!)

I have a pair of Ray-Ban's and a pair of Oakley's. They look so much alike that I have to look carefully to see which is which ... until I put them on and stand in the sunshine. The Oakley's are significantly better at cutting glare and giving me a crisper image. And the Ray-Ban's aren't bad at all.

I also like the clarity of the image with Bolle.

How valuable is your eyesight? Please, do not buy cheap sunglasses after what you have been through, look after your eyes as well as you can. I am not saying you should spend thousands but don't skimp either. I personally wear Ray Bans because I know they have good lenses, they do a good job filtering out UV and they do not scratch easily so they last longer. There are many other brands which are just as good and with different styles, it depends on what you want. If you go to luxottica.com and click on brands you will find a good selection including Ray Bans. There are only a few high class manufacturers which seem to have a monopoly on the whole industry, another one I know of is Safilo. Do some research on medical websites or just ask your optometrist what he recommends, surely he must give you some follow up care after your surgery?

I used to wear Oakleys and they are great sunglasses but due to the extreme curvature on some of their lenses "they have to artificially refract the light" and it does not agree with some eyes, like mine. Don't quote me on the above, I don't remember the exact words the optometrist used but I noticed trouble focusing after wearing them and my night vision deteriorated. The same thing happened with a guy I work with and we stopped wearing those particular Oakleys. If you do discover some adverse effects when you do wear sunglasses, do not hesitate to go back to the optometrist and have them changed.

The comparison to your Sebenza is a good one, you are the one who needs to decide what is best for you and what you are prepared to spend. I cannot over emphasize that good quality sunglasses are vital.

Thanks for all replies. I will be looking into better quality sunglasses. I have 3 pairs of glasses that I can't use and the frames are only about a year old. I may just have one made into sunglasses with bifocals for close up.

My Rx sunglasses are polarized. The only problem with them is that you have to take them off when you use the credit card terminal at markets. With them on, the screens look black.

Blackflys are the way forward IMO
I have spent a fortune on sunnies in the past but the ones I like the most are the $30 blackflys.

Why do you need sunglasses? You are descended from generations of humans who endured the sun their entire lives, sometimes long ones. You can squint, your pupils contract, and you can shade your eyes. Have you considered the 'urgent need' to shield your eyes from ultra-violet could be more of the same BS our medical community continually pumps out about fats, don't use butter, don't eat eggs, drink excessive quantities of water, etc? Seems to me our so-called medical experts reverse themselves every few years. Why, they've even recently discovered that butter and bacon fat are actually better for cooking (and you) than the other artificial crap they've been pushing. Well, la-de-da, they woke up, huh? I'm 75 and have NEVER worn sun glasses in a lifetime of serving in the deserts and tropical areas of the world. Yeah, I'm not 20-20 but I haven't been since I was age 7. I thought sun glasses were a crock a long tlme ago and haven't changed my opinion. To me, they're akin to vitamin pills, food supplements, and diet aids, pure BS!

Old CW4, the pure BS is that what works for one should work for another. It doesn't. There is tremendous genetic variation involved. Some people don't get lung cancer after a lifetime of smoking, some people burn badly after a few hours out in the sun. If I don't wear sunglasses, I cannot see in bright sunlight.

Until you can see through my eyes, don't tell me what's BS.

Some people have gone barefoot for thousands of years too. I'm not giving up my shoes.

I wear Oakleys because they fit my fat head better than other brands and are good glasses. I wore cheap glasses for years and finally broke down and bought a good pair. After I did there was no going back to the cheaper ones.

Sorry, Esav. For damned sure I wasn't trying to specifically tell you 'BS.' Just stating a general comment. We have all been subjected to so much generalized 'wisdom' from the medical community as to 'what is good or bad' for us that it has caused me, an old timer with a lot of surviving in various entironments, to come to look upon much of it as so much pure theoretical BS. My comments certainly weren't personally aimed at you. I do apologize and I'll stop posting to this thread.
