Super Quench advice?

I know I have the formula around here somewhere.
I am getting ready for a Knife throwing competition/knife show. I have a table and want to bring something related to sell. I want to make some Throwing Darts out of some 1/2" round bar. This stuff I bought at a local hardware store and it is 1008 steel, Hot roll. I am thinking of grinding it to a 4sided point (One end only) and then doing a Super Quench for the first 6" or so of this 12 long piece.
How hot should the Quench be?
How hot should I take the steel?
I use a Kiln.
Tempering?
Haven't got a clue

Bob, without knowing what kind of steel I can't tell you much.
Heat it untill it loses it;s magentic properties.
Quench in warm superquench.

For what you are doing I'd bake in the oven at about 450 for 2 hours.

Good luck!

From what I understand, all that "weldable steel" from the hardware stores have a very low carbon content. It will not harden at all.

Low carbon, won't get hard. It likely will not work for you intended purpose unless it is being thrown at something really soft. Good Luck!!

Bob, I have to disagree with these guys, the superquench will get mild steel to 42,45 r

Heat the steel to nonmagnetic, aand quench in the superquench, no need to heat the superquench or to temper the darts.

Thw weapon won't be like a high carbon steel but a little shock resistance (soft) would be good for that type of thing.

One of the reasons they make hawks with an iron body and a welded stell (bit) is for shock resistance.

Hawks made of all high carbon say 5160 are more prone to breaking than the welded variety. Give it a shot.

After all men have been killing men with iron for a long time before steel was discovered.

I found out that the melting temp for this 1008 steel is 2750-2775 deg. That puts it close to o1 so I think I will heat it to 1450 and quench it in room temp olive oil. I don't want it any harder than 45-50rc. Needs to be hard enough not to bend but still take alot of impact. As a throwing spike it should work.

hey bob,
i've used that hardware weld steel before and had pretty good results. you can try heat treating a test piece and do a file test on it i've used it to make strikers before and have gotten ok sparks from it.
good luck!
