I just bought a set of coldsteel Sure Flight Thrower 1055 Carbon 12" and was wondering if anyone had any experiece with these. I have never thrown before, any tips or tricks or youtube videos which are espeically good to look at? what kinda back stop do you guys use, any suggestions on setting one up? how different is foam then solid wood for a back stop? how about cardboard for a backstop?

I haven't done any throwing myself, but when i try to set up my target, I'm going to try cardboard on wood, might dampen some of the noise when it hits. I have a True Flight thrower, but as I said, haven't done any throwing yet, probably going to happen this weekend though.

I have not done any serious throwing, and none at all for many years. However, all the targets I used, or saw used were not just wood, they were cross-sectioned logs, usually fairly large (2-3 feet) in diameter. The reasoning behind this is that by using the cross section, there is no worry about lining up on the grain of the wood. If the knife (or tomahawk) twists, it will still stick. If you are using lumber and using the long side, if you don't line up the knife with the grain, it often will not stick.

That said, if you don't have a large stump laying around your garage or yard, then perhaps using multiple layers of cardboard over wood could be the answer.

My $0.02, and worth every penny.

I usually throw at a bunch of stacked up cardboard that is screwed into a plywood wall. It doesn't last long, but I have lots of cardboard.

If you are throwing no spin, you can throw that 12" thrower hard enough that pretty much any wood target should be fine.
