How does everyone get the "bark" from annealing off of their blanks and the "scale" off of their blades after heat treating? Is this where a disk grinder comes in handy?

If you have as compressor you can get a cheap sand blast unit, saves alot of money in belts. You can do it outside with a cheap unit that just sticks into the bag of sand. Wear your face mask when dealing with super fine sand as in blasting!

I rough grind the mill scale off with my 9" disc sander with 60, 150, and then 350 grit paper. You have to be really careful to keep things flat. I check the blank with my Starrett micrometer, and as long as it's within a few thousandths for a fixed blade, it's usually okay. For a smooth folder you want it dead flat.

Then I hollow or flat grind the blade to 120 send it off to Paul Bos, and when I get it back I start off with the 120 grit belt again and work my way up to the desired finish with the bevels.

Then I hit the flats on the disc again with 320 and then 600. Then I sand it all on a sanding plane to make sure it's flat and get the sanding strokes running with the length of the blade.

Even if you buy precision ground, you will still have to start with fairly coarse abrasives to get the surface grind lines out.

If you have a mill, you can use a fly cutter to get a fairly clean finish...but it still has to be sanded.

Get your self a 4x36 grinder
I found somthing that really works
use a 400 grit belt take the bark off
with that,I do mine a little different
then after the 400 grit belt has worn some real well, get some TFL 30 and spray your belt, make a pass or two with that it is almost a mirror finish.I then start my grind
it take alot of work in the end the less work
you have to do after heat treat the better of
you are.
