Does anyone have any experience with this watch and its many useful features including: digital compass, altimeter, thermometer, etc.? Is this just a gadget tool or could its features be useful and accurate in the outdoors?
Thanks for any comments. I saw it in my most recent L.L. Bean catalog at approx. $189

I have a Casio with these features. (1470 prt-40) I use it for daily wear. I use the compass and altimeter frequently, and the thermometer occasionally. When I wear the watch my body heats it, so it has to be off my wrist for awhile in order for the temperature reading to accurately reflect the outside temperature.

Now that I have used a watch with these features I would be reluctant to return to a traditional watch.

As a devouted gadget freak I bought one when it first came out. IMHO .... Don't bother. The thing is huge, catches on clothing. You need the instruction manual if you want to re set it. It is easy to read if you know what you are reading. The altimeter is not accurate. I like the Casio much better.

I wouldn't recommend it (unless you are a gadget nut). Other than being overpriced and down-right huge for a watch (reminds me of old playschool toys), as others have pointed out it is generally inaccurate. If you are wearing it, the temperature reading is significantly affected by your wrist. The altimeter gives a good rough estimate (just not worth 200 bucks). I've also found the compass to be VERY flaky. I think it is too easily influenced by EMF's in urban areas (I've actually seen people use suunto's as everyday watches in the city - these people have too much cash to burn). I would recommend getting a regular watch, and bring along a reliable non-electronic compass, a small thermometer, and a topographic map (when combined with the compass and used correctly can be a better altimeter than any altimeter watch).

It is just like the GPS and the Cell Phone. A great thing to use but you'd better have good map and compass skills first...and use them as your primary tool.
