Today I received my first custom folder.
This is a Darrel Ralph Mini-Maxx, a variant on his Madd Maxx design with a 4" blade. This one has a spearpoint recurve blade made of Talonite.
Almost every knife I have owned has taught me a little something about my own needs, wants, preferences, and tastes. I gradually came to realize that while I really loved several of my production knives, none of them had all of the features I wanted. So I set out to list everything I wanted in a knife. Then I started looking at custom designs and corresponding with custom makers.
I originally wrote to Darrel Ralph about getting a variation on his EDC design, but after hearing what I wanted he suggested that the Madd Maxx was a better match. I hadn't thought about a Maxx with a recurve blade, but that design had everything I was looking for. And in a really attractive package, too.
This knife is going to be my ultimate EDC, the one knife I always carry, no matter what others I have with me. The design is simple, low maintenance, and tough. The size and weight will allow me to carry it anywhere I normally go, including work (which prohibits blades over 4"). The blade shape, guards, and grip make it effective for any cutting task, including defense.
Thank you Darrel!

P.S. The Mini-Maxx makes a great backup for my newly acquired Camillus CUDA Maxx!
