I've been considering two of John's knives, the Whisper CT and X-plorer, and decided I could afford just the Whisper CT this month. So I called him and enjoyed "meeting" him over the phone. Very nice guy to talk with, and answered every question and volunteered even more. I even asked a few questions about the X-plorer for future reference, and he mentioned he had 6 left. Yikes! Needless to say, I ordered both knives at once, being frugal and saving on shipping and all ;). So this is a heads up thread...Greco knives will soon be sold out! I knew this of course, but only 6 left hit home. You'll be pleased to know John's health and spirits are good. I'll report back next week on 'my' knives :D

Nice to hear that John is doing well. I'd love to meet him face to face, as I found him to be one of the nicest guys I've ever done business with. I bought one of his Whisper folders and gave it to my son as a Christmas gift. I just shot my toy budget for the month on a new Edge Pro, so I'll have to raid the little woman's cookie jar if I'm going to get a Whisper for myself this month...

Shalom,
Mark

John Greco is a good man. His knives reflect his character - strong and dependable. :)

I saw this thread and called John Greco and was able to order his last Explorer knife. It is the big bowie. What a neat guy to talk to.

He said it was the last one he had available and it had been rockwell tested so there was a slight grind mark on the blade that had been covered up by the powder coating so you wouldn't even be able to see it.

The knife will be special to me for alot of reasons but the best reason is that I was able to talk to him. Known about his knives for years.

Kinda cool,

I met john at a knife show a couple years ago - he was so warm and engaging, in a rough-hewn trucker sort of way, that I ended up buying a large FB knife from him even though I went there loking for a gent's folder. Very solid knives at unbelievably low prices!! I'm sad to hear that his health problems prevent him continuing, I thought it was great to have someone providing the example of tough high-quality working knives at such low prices. glad to hear he's doing well, and hopefully he will find something else to excel at now that knifemaking is a thing f the past.

What the heck
Called John back and ordered a whisper folder to come with the explorer.

Seems like the indestructable pocket knife I have wanted.

wazzup,

I think you will really like the Whisper folder. I have one and I think it's a real winner. I also got the little service kit for it.

Well, I recieved the whisper folder and the explorer and all I can say is this looks like about the most indestructable pocket knife I have ever seen.

I wish I had some micarta scales to put on it though. Are those still available or maybe I can get someone to put some on? I am afraid with the metal sides it has it will wear a hole in my pants.

The explorer knife is a brute, and it is scary sharp.

Any ideas about scales for the side of the folder?

From what I can gather, the micarta scales are no longer available from John Greco. What I did was take a pocket hone and smooth out all the edges on the handles and spine of the blade. I mean, they weren't all that bad......but I did it anyhow. Now it's really quite comfortable to hold onto.

I'm leaving mine pretty much alone. I kind of like the spartan, no-nonsense approach to the knife.
