I just came across this model when I was surfing E-bay. I have seen it before but I never paid any attention because I guess I thought it was either a Q or a Calypso Jr. or something. When I looked at the size, it surprised me. It is about 8" overall.

I have missed my PE large Calypso and thought it was close to perfect but a tad long. I also like my Calypso Jr. but it is too short for some things. I wished there was a knife between the Calypso jr. and the larger Calypso. it appears that the R-2 is just that!

This is the first new Spyderco I have been really excited about since the Centofante III.

What do people think of this knife? I don't hear much about it and a search didn't turn up anything. Is this going to be my next Spyderco?

It's really nice-looking. I'm not sure how it feels in the hand. I'm going to stop by the SFO soon and hold one. If the cutouts aren't sharp and the whole thing feels stiff and solid enough, it'll probably be my next Spydie.

It looks to me as if you really answered your own question...the blade length is right were you would like it to be. It holds real well in a normal sized hand IMO. Cuts well. Is tip up only so I don't EDC but I would if it matched my prefered carry method.

One final thought is you shouldn't take to long to decide as it is a sprint run of 600 of each SE and PE. Buy while you can. I haven't heard anything bad about it on the Spyderco forum.

I just read that thread. Thanks for the link. Now I am only more unsure if I should buy one or not.:o Now I am thinking the Strech may not be a bad idea. I think I will just keep buying Spydercos until I try them all.:D

One thing to consider, assuming you can't get to actually handle both knives first, is that since the R2 is a limited production Sprint Run, it would be very easy to resell if you decide it's not the one for you.

These photos may help, or cofuse you even more...

allenc,
I've been EDC mine for the last week or so, and I think the handle is really pretty tough. I love the knife, the blade size is just right and the handle is slim enough to fit in my pocket and feels like it's not even there. The lock is solid as a tank, at least on mine. Handle is metal, not FRN so it's really rigid and I can't get it to yield at all when I squeeze in on it. My only complaint is that I have the spyderedge version and somehow I've already managed to roll the very tip. Don't know what I did either. Not much just the tiniest knick that a non-knife nut probably wouldn't notice. Otherwise a great overall knife.

Lagarto.

Thanks for the reply.
It looks really nice and I think that I will seek one out.

Allen.

The handle is aluminium, covered in Almite, so it's VERY light and comfy to carry.

Well, I stopped by the mall and checked one out in person. I couldn't get it out of my mind even though a few people have told me that it was not a great knife. I don't know what they mean after handling it. I like it even more in person than on paper and from the pics. I went home and bought one on E-Bay because the knife store has a 200% mark-up on all the knives they sell.:barf: I would buy from them but when they are asking over $225 for a Benchmade 940, I just can't. The same knife on E-Bay or any online store is like $120.

Anyway, I got to hold it and I like it. It is really light in the hand. It feels lighter than it looks. It seemed very stiff and solid and I like the blade design. It is a unique looking knife as well that will be sure to catch some eyes. The finger choil is a little small but it is still usable. I didn't see any flaws in the one I checked out and hope the one I ordered is as nice.

If it is true that they only 600 of each, I may look for another one while the getting is good. I had no problem finding one so it seems like there are more than 1200 total but maybe it just didn't sell well. I really don't get why it didn't sell because it is not a strange blade shape or handle shape. I think nobody really knew anything about it, I know I didn't know anything about it and I am into Spyderco knives.
