I want to know more about this machette. It says they are distal tapered- what thickness do they start at, and how much taper? What steel? What hardness? (assuming fairly soft since they include a file for sharpening) Also, the ad says it has an 18 inch blade, but from the picture it seems more like 18 inches is the overall length including handle.
Here's why I want to know: I am thinking about getting one and grinding a sharpened clip into the spine, starting just ahead of the grooves, to make a sort of "poor man's bowie". I would also need to do some extensive reshaping of the handle. I figure it would be quick and light for clearing light brush, but also give me a usable point. This way I could save some wear and tear on my good Bowie knife for less demanding tasks.
