Well a good friend of mine lost her edc somewhere so she's looking to replace it. Showed her a bunch of knives, and brands and so far she likes the 550 the best. While I've never really looked at this knife before...looking at the pics of it...its started to grow on me. It occured I don't really have a simple edc knife that isn't a monster knife. I was thinking of getting on myself after hers. Everything I have read suggests its a great knife, and a strong lock. Was wondering about price, and what I should look for in cost?

Oh and her lost edc was a gerber ez out. She had it for 2 years. She wanted something with a bit better steel, but the same shape and size. Then she saw the 550, after 10 other pages of knives.

You have a few good options with the griptillian. The most suggested is the Ritter Grip with S30V. Recently Cabelas commissioned some Griptillians in D2, personally I would go with the Cabela's version. It's pretty reasonably priced and I have a thing for coated palinedge. ;p

The 550 is a very good user knife.

If you want Cabelas has a special run with D2 steel, which many prefer over the 440C in the original 550. Personally I'd stick with the 440C for a casual user.

You may also want to take a look at the 550's little brother, the 555 mini-Griptilian. It is (IMO) a more refined and solid knife than the big one, and about the perfect size for daily carry in a purse or pocket.

thanks for the input so far.....

odd request, and don't know if anyone can do it but what I know would help would be if someone had a side by side pic of the gerber ez out...550, and any of that series.

The BM 550 is one of my favorite knives - it is one of three EDC's that I use the most.

The blade shape and grind are extremely well designed and executed- the AXIS lock is solid- and it comes in two sizes, three bladetypes and multiple handle colors.

I find that the yellow, red, and blue handle colors are more sheeple friendly, and are also more easily seen if you accidentally drop your knife.

I recently lost my BM550 - and bought a variation called the BM 552 - which is also known as the Ritter Survival Knife as a replacement.

It has the same handle as a Griptillian, but the blade is S30V steel vs the 550's 440C, and the blade shape is better profiled for cutting.

It addresses the biggest trade off that I found with the original 550 - its 440C steel took a great edge, but couldn't keep it very long when used for aggressive cutting like cardboard boxes or hardened wood.

S30V steel works much better for these types of applications.
