Hello All,

My apologies once again for my absence from the forum over the past few days. Maybe someday I'll get out of aviation and get a real job. You know, a job where I get to work in the daylight, can refer to days of the week as Monday and Tuesday instead of "Day 1" and "Day 2", and when people ask the time I can say it's 5:00 PM instead of 22:00 GMT.

Anyway, the Bowie Design Gallery is now officially open. As of this moment the Gallery contains designs by Rick Carignan and yours truely. I know there are more of you who have Bowie sketches, designs and pictures you want up there. You can send them to me or you can submit them yourself to the GH Forum account I set up at PhotoPoint. To submit them yourself, simply attach your picture to an e-mail and address it to: photos@photopoint.com The subject line must read exactly as follows:

Account: ghforum@ghostmail.de

NOTE: Be sure to leave a space between Account: and ghforum@ghostmail.de If there's no space after the colon your pics will float around in cyberspace forever

.

I'll check the account several times a day and move the pics to the Bowie gallery as they come in. If you don't see your pics on the gallery after a few hours, send me an e-mail and I'll check it out.

Guys,

FYI - Just so you know, if you send any photos, designs or drawings to the ghforum@ghostmail.de account on PhotoPoint it will only deposit the photo into the account. I won't get to see any attached message or return e-mail address. So, Please send me an e-mail to let me know what you sent or include your name as part of the .jpg file name when you send the pics. For example :

Sumo-Gurkhabowie.jpg

I want to be sure each of you gets proper credit for your designs.

Thanks,

Blackdog

Sumo,

Beautiful Bowie Design. You know that I am very jealous of your ability to render them in 3-D.

Just kidding. At least now we have some more designs for Craig to take with him to Nepal.

Don't ask me why cuz I aint got a clue but so far my favorite Bowie style are the DogSoldier I and II.

Blackdog,
I think a 5" handle and 12" blade would be perfect for someone my size (5'6", small hands). Bigger guy/hand, bigger blade.
This design is based on a 19th Century spear point Bowie made by a New Orleans cutler named LaSerre. I changed the handle/guard (which was beautiful but complicated, impractical, and sort of French in design, like a Peugeot or Citroen if you get my drift) to s simpler style. The blade is unchanged. What attracted me to it is that it is very similar in section to a Khukuri: deeply fullered, and with concave edges. I sent an earlier version with some of the more complicated handle stuff to Craig, who agreed it was too complicated for the kamis (involved casting a guard, for example) but agreed to show the blade to them. I think this one is doable in Nepal - rosewood scales, silver pins and guard, bright mirror-polished blade. Any thoughts?

Berkley,

Very nice design, and thanks for joining in the fun.

Al,

The Katmandu Bowie/Fighter was drawn in a scale of 3/4" = 1 " which makes for a blade length of 8 1/4 " with an overall length of 13 1/4" I see it with flat-ground top and bottom edges and a taper that extends from the tip back about 7 inches. It should make for an extreamly "fast" fighter. Will send a top view and cross-section to you today for more feedback. Hope you are feeling better.

Berk,

The spear-point blade shape is really interesting. Since seeing your design I've been trying to imagine how it would handle. The only spear-point blade that I have is one that I picked up from a Masai in Tanzania. It's got a 17 inch, double edged blade, with a 5 inch, hide wrapped handle and a stiched hide scabbard. It's a crude weapon, but extremely effective. Hell, the Masai use them to kill lions!! Being on the receiving end of one of these is NOT an option.

For a reality check I also picked up my large Bowie. It's a 10" clip-point blade (1/4" stock) with a 5" handle. Add 2 more inches of blade and a spear point and it would be plenty of knife for all but the largest of people. I love big blades. But, I try to remind myself that If it's a user, I have to carry it. I think the blade & size combo you have is very appealing. If they're doable in Nepal I think I'll have to get one.

I have to admit, I am partial to Sumo's Gurkha Bowie. He's captured the spirit of the bowie tradition and kept true to a semblance of the khukuri tradition. Even if that's not what we have in mind for the actual bowie design, I just may have to hijack that design and have a run made (and called "the Sumo Khukuri).

I believe that the spear point Bowie was a favorite style of the Confederates, and it is also very reminensent of the Amies Bowie issued to US Calvary Troops during the Indian Wars. Not sure how long the blade was on the Amies but I'm sure someone here could tell us. It really fit into what a military knife is used for.

I have say I like Sumo's Gurkha Bowie as the melding of two traditons. I would take one of those if it were ever made.

Sorry if this has already been answered but where are you headed with this?
