I just found my first Canoe or it found me. I was out hunting traditional patterns after work yesterday and this one showed up. It had been slightly neglected but looks to be a recent vintage. Its a #62131 CV in Amber jigged bone. It has a spear and a pen blade with a birch bark canoe etching on it. I really like the way it feels in the hand and its symmetry. I cleaned up the rust on it and oiled it and gave it the care it deserves. I then whittled a few sticks with it and it handles well and is shaving sharp. It really has some real snap and almost a nail breaker pull on the main spear point.
Overall I am really taken in by its beauty after spending some time with it. I would think it would have a great following. I just shot a few pics of it and would love to hear others impressions of the pattern and see some pictures of your canoe.

I've always liked the looks of them but have never handled one in person. Looks like a pretty good score you've got there. As a bonus I think not too long ago there was a general consensus here that it's the pattern Dirty Harry Callahan used to dig out a .357 bullet in Magnum Force. I'm a big fan of those movies, so it scores a few points there with me.

Feels great in the hand, and the smooth profile is easy in the pocket. And there is enough handle to hold onto. I gave a Queen Canoe in D2 to my now 82 year old dad a few years ago, and he has used the heck out of it. He'll do stuff like clean out the undercarriage of a push mower with it, which I would never do with a knife.

Canal Street Cannitler.

Don't forget the Baby Butterbean, which is really a baby Canoe.

WvHiker...thanks for the comments

Powernoodle...that Queen is beautiful. I was not aware of the Butterbean so thanks for that pic. Its even got swedges.

I love canoe knives. I always carry one in my watch pocket, independent of what knife I carry as edc. No matter the situation or people around me, I can always pull out a small and friendly looking knife. It's a "rough rider". It is quite young and pristine, but I'll post a picture if I find the chance.

I like yours. Though stainless is nice, a well taken care of carbon knife tells a lot about the owner. Although stainless is often inexpensive it also is mute.

Love your pics :)
Some time ago, I started a Canoe thread:

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...cognition-Canoe?highlight=pattern+recognition

cause a Canoe (a Buck) was the first American traditional pattern I have tried.
On a pure theoretical basis, the Canoe shouldn't be a good pattern for me, for its blade combination. In fact, I picked it up cause I found it casually in a store (and believe me, those knives are rare around here). Still, I think I understand your point; the Canoe has a charm in it, or at least so I felt.
Now I moved on, I'm about to try other patterns, and my Canoe will start a new road away from me soon. But that doesn't mean that I'm ungrateful to it.

Gobbo...I also seek out carbon blades but this one just found me and I this is my first CV knife. I am very pleased.

quattromori...exactly...It does have a sort of charm for me. I read your thread and I see that some folks have not warmed up to the pattern. I'm finding I like how it fits the hand more and more. A few reason for this is the thinness of the body of the knife. The sort of choil that is formed from the shape of the bolster when the spear point is open. Also the flat that is provided by the bolster for your finger when carving in different orientations. The shape of the bolsters are visually appealing to me as well.

Few things I like about this pattern.
The shape of the bolsters make is very round so it does not get stuck in your pockets. As Yablanowitz pointed out in "my" thread, even if it's not a small knife, the shape of the bolsters make it very pocket friendly.
The angle between the handle and the main blade (less than 180°) makes it comfy for certain kinds of "frontal" cutting tasks.
The shape of the bolster gives my thumb a place to rest "protected".
And, the knife looks nice when it's closed.
About its charm, I don't know where it comes from, and it seems like many people don't really adore this pattern. I think that it's not the best pattern if you consider it in terms of utility, due to its "bad" (to me) blade combination, and that's why I will give my Canoe to someone else. But then again, I look at your pics and like it...

thatotherguy..thats is unfortunate..especially for the minimalists among us

quattromori...I'll post some more pics to dissuade you ;)

I am a fan of the canoe pattern. I carry one with some regularity and use one at home for slicing and cutting chores often. I keep a 4 blade Fight'n Rooster canoe on my bench in the shop and I'm carrying my single blade Mutz canoe in my pocket now. They are really hand and pocket friendly knives with large enough blades to take on significant tasks. The blades are ususally full flat ground from spine to belly and make wonderfull slicers. To those of you that haven't tried this pattern, it is definitely worth a look. Some think the 2 spring versions are too thick, but to me they feel better in the hand, but that is just my opinion. Lots of great canoes available out there and the one the OP shows is a classic Case.

So, yeah I've got some and I like the pattern. I use it pretty frequently.

That is a very nice looking Case Canoe Gevonovich! I like the blade combo my self since it's similar to a two blade cattleknife or baby sunfish. It does everything I need. My Canoe has what I would call perfect walk and talk like my 47 series Stockmans! Your really going to enjoy the CV steel especailly on those wonderfully thin blades; it's a cutting little bastard!

TLARRbb...you have some fine specimens of the pattern! Thanks very much for posting pictures of them. I will look up the Fight'n Rooster 4 blade ..I have to see that one.

Peter Parker..thanks. I'm really enjoying this knife and it is a sharp.....

I have a Canoe, Carl Schlieper Stag Handles. I sometimes carry it. It´s a little to big carrying it in my pocket. I´d like to carry it in a little sheath, which I don´t have. I´m looking for it. The handles are a little big to thick. I´ll try it carrying it in my pocket, again.

Kind regards
Andi

Humppa...love to see pictures of your Schlieper Canoe with some magnificent Bavarian scenic backgrounds:D

I looked again and did find a photo of it. It has had some damage (chipping) of the horn scales from dropping it off the bench onto a hard floor, but it still works fine and the chips are small enough that it doesn't affect how it feels in the hand. So, I probably won't have them replaced unless I do something dumb like that again and a scale breaks. Here it is:

The spey and coping blades are really thin and the coping blade especially is too flexible. I wish it was only a two blader because of that. It's still a nice knife and great user though. Sharpens up quickly and holds an edge well.

Thanks for the picture Ed and info on the coping blade on that one. I've never had a horn scale knife but they sure look nice. Been really considering a GEC Gepetto whittler in horn.

Gevonovich, That's a very nice Canoe you have as are the others posted here. I only have one (a 1976 Case red bone) and I don't seem to carry very often---that will have to change:D
