The Edge - - Movie

Just wondered if the fire starting technique mentioned there was really doable?

Taking Fire from Ice?

He stated that you could shape ice into a lens and focus the sun onto tinder and start a fire. Has anyone ever really been able to do this?

Glad to see this Forum up, could come in handy real soon!

I have never tried this but it woud make sense that if you polished it correctly the ice would act as a miagnifier for the sun just like any crystal would. I do kow they used to use polished salt crystals to intensify laser beams.

I thought that as well, I envisioned making a makeshift holder from a branch to hold the `lens' while trying to start a fire. Maybe when the ice starts to show up I'll give it a go...

There was a book given to the star of the movie, something about `How to surive in the Wilderness' which he proceeded to lose when the plane crashed.

But that made me wonder if there is a handy book that can be reccomended? I know the FoxFire stuff but haven't seen them in a while, is there one that would be a good beginners type book?
Asking here because there are sooooo many books out there to choose from.

Thanks ahead of time!

G2, There are some other threads here which discuss some of the better books. I know Ron Hood, who has a great set of videos on the subject, will recomend Greg Davenport's book. You may want to check out both. I am anxiously awaiting the book's arrival. I already have all the tapes done by the Hood's (Ron & Karen).

Meanwhile, I thought you should know the following:

The author of the book that Morse receives from his secretary ("Surviving in the Wilderness") is shown as "D. Croyle". Darragh Croyle is director Lee Tamahori's assistant.

Now do I have to give credit to the Internet Movie Database

....that is where I saw that.

By the way, the knife that Morse (Anthony Hopkins) receives as a gift from his wife (Elle Macpherson)is a custom-made lockback knife made by Brian Lyttle, Box 5697, Dept. TK, High River, Alberta T1V 1M7. I have seen this knife information on the forums and in the May 1998 issue of Tactical Knives, in Steven Dicks, "On the Point."

Thanks Donald, I'll check into those.

I've met with Brian at Ashokan Seminar a couple of years ago, he is a Hoot! Very nice guy, heavy accent and a fabulous maker. He told us stories about the movie and meeting with the star, said it was great fun!

I have heard of it being done, but I think I am going to give it a try.
Sounds pretty cool.
Excellent movie BTW.

I liked the movie also, while I watch it I sit and fiddle with several knives, the wife just rolls her eyes, she will never understand my infatuation with edged tools. But luckily, she says she still loves me! That's a good thing, right?

Jeff, I gotta feeling you're right, I wondered also just how long it would take to first shape the ice which would be pretty cold in itself, and then hold it so it focuses the sunlight long enough to ignite tinder? Probably just a neat thing to say and not really practical at all, but I think I still might give it a go this year.

Told my wife what to get me for Christmas,
Greg's book, looking forward to it.

I have personaly talked to 2 peaple who haven seen this done with the ice. They said it works but is a real pain in the *** . The ice has to be real clear with no bubbles or streaks in it , you scrape the ice into shape then polish it by melting the surface with your hand. Then there is the fact that in some latitudes the sun is pretty low and weak so you have to use the sunsrays when they are at their highist to get a good effect, does't work to good late in the afternoon which is usually the time that you are starting to think about getting a fire going. But It can be done if all the conditions are right.
