So I finally got around to soaking my Cold Steel frontier hawk in a bucket of BLO. When I got the thing the head-handle fit was absolutly terrible, one throw (even a good stick) or a couple chops would loosen it. I worked on the fit a lot by sanding and it got a lot better but still came loose more frequently than my other hawks.

After a while soaking in the oil its gone from the loosest hawk I own to the tightest. Even wild throws have not dislodged it yet.

So my advice to anyone working on the fit of their hawks give it a good soak when your done

Do you get the fit as tight as possible and then drop the whole thing, head and all, in the BLO? I'm assuming that's the way to do it so the wood soaks up the oil and then expands inside the eye for a nice tight union.

Hi there

How long did you soak the hawk in the BLO?
Just got my first hawk last weekend and have already turned into a throwing fiend. The head was slipping up a bit so this is timely advice.

Thanks very much for the tip.

Best regards

I dropped it late afternoon let it sit over night, the next day, and the next night. I guess around 40 hours. May be overkill but it did the job.

Spent a few days prior sanding the handle to fit better and after it dried wrapped some rawhide under the head. So far so good.

Thanks for the info . I'll be going through hawk withdrawal for a day or two.

That's why you need to buy more hawks!:D

Hi there Billy
A buddy of mine is a blacksmith and gave me two heads so as we speak I'm working on the second haft. I'm a crazed collector of knives and many other areas of interest so I expect that within a year I'll have lots of hawks to play with. I've been thinking of getting ahold of Steve form Coal Creek to have him make me a few. Love this forum.

Best regards

Robin
