Some of you may know that I have been on a Grail Quest for this knife:

It is the EU Uncle MoFo, only offered in the Minumental ‘Ganza of Feb. 06. AFAIK, these were only ever pictured in Jerry‘s ‘Ganza post. I have never seen another pic of them on the Forum. Have you?

btw, this might be a good time to review the terminology here, as it can get confusing.

MoJo flat grind
MoFo sabre grind

Mr. has the blade catch
Uncle is hookless.

Newbies may not know that Eric Isaacson is responsible for the Uncle model, as he asked Jerry to make his Mr. MoFo without the hook.

So I blame Porkerson for this obsession!

That ‘Ganza also offered the EU Mr. MoFo versions

Some of these Mr. MoFos have been sighted since the ‘Ganza, at least a few of the green ones have. xaman offered one for sale about two years ago, and while I dithered about the ugly hook, silverdragon33 took it.

Some regrets. :grumpy:

xaman did later take pity on me, and sold me one of his user DCBB Uncle MoFo, with the standard Ergo handle. It’s great knife, but I’m not a big fan of the E handles, and eventually I decided that I had to have the EU model. Liu Kang traded me a EU Mr. MoJo, but it’s just not the same.

Fast forward to last Monday. I was on the Forum during lunch at work, and over just a few minutes received PMs from both Mustard Man and stricknine, giving me a heads up on a EU Mr. MoFo that Dave Brown was selling. MM even suggested that I get the hook cut off, since the knife was already a user. (Isn’t this a great place, looking out for each other, and enabling our collective obsession?)

Here it is in David’s sale post

So I sent off an email and asked him to call me. Turns out someone else had stripped the coating and sanded it to a very nice satin. I told him I wanted it, and asked if he would cut the hook off for me. I knew that he had done mods and even cut handles before, so I was comfortable that he could do it without messing up the knife. Dave knew that the Uncles normally have a little bump of a thumb ramp, and asked if he should try to copy that. The ramp was not important to me, and it would be easier to do the job without it, so I left it to his discretion to just make the transition on the spine from the blade to the handle.

Well, it arrived Friday, to my great surprise, and it is a thing of beauty!

A little bit of pits (INFI dimples) on the flats on one side, but otherwise very clean for a stripped Combat Grade knife. Somebody did a very good satin sanding job; whoever you are, I thank you, sir!

My sneaking suspicion is that this is, in fact, xaman’s old knife, as I know that silverdragon33 had sold it, and the buyer later stripped it.

Dave’s work is so clean, that you would never know this knife had the hook.

So here is the little collection now

The E Uncle has a long swedge, running about four inches back from the tip. Very good looking. The EU Uncle has one that is much less pronounced, about two inches long. One side of the swedge is a little bit shorter that the other, can’t tell if it was factory or modded.

I assume that the EU versions were ground off of E handle blanks. This pic makes it look like the pommel of the EU extends further than the E, but that is deceiving. If you line up the front talon holes, rather than the tube holes, you would see that the E handle is actually the longer one.

IMG_2645.jpg

The E Uncle is the heaviest, with the full handle, at 17.5 oz, the EU Uncle 16.8 oz, and the flat ground EU Mr MoFo weighs 15.7 oz. The two Uncles feel the same in hand, the Mr. is noticeable lighter. The balance point of the EU Uncle is 1/16” behind the plunge line, for the Uncle it’s 3/8” back, and the MoJo’s balance point is ¾” behind the plunge line, just in front of the scales.

Some pics in hand

Sorry there are no action shots, but I have nothing to cut/chop right now. We’ll see how it throws at the next NEOhio Busse Boys Chop-In event.

So there you have it, the story of a successful Grail Quest. I would like to thank everyone in the chain of custody that eventually brought this knife to me, especially David Brown for making it into the Uncle. The mod fee he charged was more than fair, and a bargain for me.

What’s your Grail?

you know… maybe have Garth put some liners under the scales, and give it a DCBB…….

Soooo, I dont guess you will be needing the other one now will you??:p

BTW, it looks great!!!

That baby is SWEET!!!! I had my eye on her as well. Congrats on the GRAIL score!!!

CONGRATS!!!!

I know you've been after that one for a LONG time!

I actually like it better without the thumb ramp.

.

Hey Guy, would it be possible to send in a e-handle knife to the custom shop and have them make a EU handle of it?

Resinguy, Those are all Awesome I really like that design. Thanks for all the Imformation concerning the different grinds, styles, handles, ect, I'd be proud to own said knives truly beautiful.

AWESOME score! I have been waiting and waiting for these pictures - it's about stinkin' time!

I wanted that one badly myself, but couldn't swing the coin, so I was glad when you scored it.

What’s your Grail?

Right now I'm thinking it's that DCBB Ergo handled version you've got, and since you don't have a need for it anymore.......... ;)

Thanks All!

I would think yes, in theory, but only Garth can say.

Get in line! I think there's at least two Hogs ahead of you, even before this thread. and what makes you think you could swing the coin on it, anyway. :D

An outstanding post.

Not only do I find a famous Grail Quest has been completed; I also improve my understanding of Busse blades.

You're a prince, Guy.:D

Now ... what's your next Grail Quest?

[Can't mention mine; don't want to damage my chances.]
