The HI Kerambit... some observations, & things nobody (I think) has mentioned...

1. It balances perfectly. Right on that little finger groove. The weight of the ring counters the weight of the blade, and the break-even point is right where you’d want it to be... the front finger groove, thusly making it feel very light in the hand.

2. With its false edge, this knife can be used to thrust, to my surprise. I thought they only had a raptor-claw function of slashing... noooo. She punches holes surprisingly well.

3. The mirror finish was unusually good, but I didn’t realize the blade has mini-fullers, like a BDC. This has to make it stronger, lighter too. Plus it looks great!

4. You have a choice of grips with the k-bit. If you put your finger thru the hole, you wind up with a grip pretty far to the back. Ignore the ring and you great an overall better balanced feel. But if I was using it where I could lose it (at sea, like cutting rope or prop obstructions), I’d be putting my finger thru the ring for more positive retention...

So, HI kerambit guys, what do you like about yours? What tricks of use have you found?

AA,
the kerambit is one of my fav knives. Not just of my HI collection, but of my entire collection. You're spot on about the ring centering up the weight. Honestly, the only time i'd ever use the ring would be to retain the blade if i were in a SD situation or, like you said, working near water. I sharpened up the false edge to a razors edge, but left it pretty fat because i'm not sure how hard it is. My 'bit is basicly used for possible SD situations. It rides great in a jacket pocket, even in a nice more formal jacket it can be slipped deep into the breast pocket. I see the 'bit as kind of the .38 snubbie of the knife world. There in a flash and anyone that sees it immediately regrets being on the other end. Technically it's legal for me to carry it. No real knife laws per say in Indiana and no reason for a cop to stop and frisk me. I'm a clean cut guy that mides his own business. as i have said before, the kerambit allows you to go from potential target to pi$$ed off raptor in a heartbeat, and you're right, AA, you could punch holes through sheet steel with that lil' darlin';) Welcome, to the club, buddy:)

No, I keep a Villager Baby Ganga Ram Special for that. Open up that tin box in a heartbeat.

:D

And a 18" Sirupati for chasin' night-time critters.

Glad to hear you like it. I happen to feel exactly the same!

I love holding it in my hand. Inspires confidence.....makes me do "air slashing moves"...:D...and I've definitely considered carrying it. I wish I would have had more time to design a proper sheath for it. But as it was, we had to get it in and fast, Pala left for Nepal the day after it arrived in Reno.

Dan, have you come up with any sheath designs for it at all? I love mine so much, that i'm thinking about having someone make a nice sheath that could ride on the belt, but remain thin enough to slip down in a jacket pocket.

I'm working on a concealed shoulder carry....which would be a lot of fun. :D

no discussion of the Kerambit is complete without data regarding how many tons of whale blubber you were able to strip off the beast in a single afternoon.

I was WONDERING what the dang thing was actually used for... now, my flensing needs are well met.

Can you flense a house-eatin' squirrel? Yikes.

Flense? isn't that what they do to sheep?

kidding of course;)

mine just came about 1/2 hr ago... that not bad two days from reno to ft lauderdale

I have 86 Hi blades in my collection but never bought one of these before...out of the box so far so good

Kill or trap the squirrel. They are just rats in drag. Their incisors never stop growing, so they have to keep chewing on stuff, like wire, wood, etc.

Don't let Walt Disney protect the little sucker from your home defense.

If you live trap it, take it 1,000 miles from your home; that way, you have a chance of getting home before it does. :)

:(

I'll settle for the groaners then...and leave the lime-light to the Master.

My poor thread.... what happened?

In my self-deflense, may I point out

1. I think munk was saying as a skinner, the k-bit is overkill. I don't even hunt anymore...

2. I trapped & transported 22 house-eaters (squirrels) last year- they are unstoppable. The will chew into your attic and do $1000's of damage in a short time. This did happen to a rental property I inherited. Havahart 7x7x30 traps (2) and peanut butter will do it.

3. We have no whales to flense here, but it IS a funny word.

4. Back to the Kerambit. Plenty of folks have them- I'd like to hear more reports on usages & carry options. I don't think, for example, a LEO would like the looks of this one...
