I hear a lot about great prices from certain vendors on the forum lately. What other benefits do forumites want in a retailer? I just read where the top benefits or features online car shoppers wanted were: available models, cost, safety record, reliability record and contact info. Do we as knife buyers also have a list of features we want from our retailers?
I have never seen a thread that listed all of our wants. Maybe some enterprising retailer will respond.:)

There's no such thing. If there was, it would be ina city that has no knife laws... and that just don't exist.

I would like product knowledge. What designs are best for what needs, what materials (handles, types of steel, etc.), what knives are available to meet those needs, knife care and sharpening. Knowledgible advice from start to finish. Massive stock on hand. There'd be a lot of talking going on in this shop. Unfortunately I've seen gun shops similar to this that fill up with people who just like to BS all day with no intention of buying and just take up time and space from those who might. Add to this great prices and customer service and you've got a recipe for business failure.

You have obviously been involved in the business end of things. Good service and knowledgable employees cost money, a lot actually. It is hard to have low prices and fabulous customer service at the same time. Thanks for the insightfull reply.

The knowledge is the hard part. I guess that's why it would have to be started by some retired guys or just buddys doing it part time. Of course inventory and starting up involves considerable cost.

I ocassionally stop by Bass Pro Shops "The Worlds Largest Outdoor Store" I was there Saturday in fact. A lady behind the counter was telling a regular working guy type what knife he should buy..." Well, I think you should go with ATS 54 or 56. Those are much better than ats 34". It was hard to keep my mouth shut. Price must be in the park were I am not being stupid to buy it. Example Net $40. B&M $55. I will pay extra for servive and instant gratification. But not like, double. Good luck my sharp friend.

Let's see.....
1.) Knowledgeable, friendly staff.
2.) Lots of stuff in stock
3.) Good prices

There's a really good knife store in Las Vegas. Sells knives, swords, everything. Love it. There's one on the way to Vegas, either in Arizona, or New Mexico, that has a ton of stock, but the guy's a dickhead that runs it. He almost cut my hand cause he got mad and yanked the Emerson Commander I was looking at out of my hand.

I think all of you are right in that if you took
10 people in "a perfect store" somebody would still
not be happy.I think that good selection, low prices,
and good customer service are tops. The consumer in this
market is very informed and a good retailer should have adequate
product knowledge from his manafacturers lines.I have certainly
found that while there are some great online outfits i.e. 1stop
etc You can find some really great small dealers for price and
selection.JMHO.

1 Stop is a great outfit. I ordered form them and then called to change my order. He put me on speakerphone as he went into "the vault" and told me which knives he had available. Once I decided, he shipped them that day. What more, my purchase (which was around $300) helped support the forums.

If you guys want knowledgeable help at a B&M store, just come and talk to me at my job! Unfortunately, are prices are usually MSRP...
