I got the Commander back from Tom. As you may recall, Tom Stratton was asked to "fancy up" one of my carry Commanders. This one is a 2000 model.

Many of you will remember that I like the thicker, older commanders and wanted Tom to make a set of black Micarta scales and I wanted them a tad thicker then stock.

Ask and ye shall receive. This is a THICK Commander. So thick in fact that I may have Tom trim it down just a skootch.

You'll also notice the same file work that was done on the "Antique Gold" Commander that Tom finished up a couple of weeks ago. Pictures don't really do it justice. Everyone who has played with either Commander has commented on how attractive the file work turned out. (matter of fact, I feel an MT LCC DA going off to Tom for "the treatment

)

Here are a couple of pictures so you can get the idea.

Awesome! How about a view showing the thickness of the scales compared to a stock Commander?
It's hard to tell from the scan, but it looks like the black-T has been re-applied over the filework on the spine. Is that the case?

Will do. I was waiting for daylight to take some digital shots. They'll be up a little later.

No, the file work is "in the white".

One thing I forgot to mention. I didn't ask him to, but on both the Antique Gold Commander and this Black Micarta Commander, he cleaned up the edges of the liners. That really adds a nice touch to the over all package.

Verrrrrrrry nice, John. Thanks for the comparison pics. Once you mentioned it, I noticed right away the polished liner edges. They look 110% better than factory. Hmmmmmmm....wonder what a Commander would look like with Koa scales?

The wider they are...the smoother the ride...!!

Is the pivot pin screw dead-centre in the micarta?
Although a tad thick...lovely work.....

No, it's an optical illusion due to the angle of the picture. I had to go check.

I don't know if he can or not. To tell you the truth, it never crossed my mind. How bad would that look!

John, That's one hell of a thick handle! It looks like it might be too thick! How does it compare to the ES1M and early Commanders? He sure did a nice job on it. Congratulations.

The knife in the pictures next to the Micarta scaled version is an old style Commander.

When I told Tom I wanted "scales a tad thicker" then came on the 2000 model, I didn't specify just how thick.

I'm still playing with the idea of having Tom thin it up some more and sending along a '98 Commander to give him a reference point.

I should have given Tom a better idea of exactly what I was looking for, but I didn't have a thick Commander with me at the time I talked with him at the show.

But, to tell you the truth, I'm really warming up to it.

The "Antique Gold" Commander is also a 2000, thin model. When Tom made the Micarta scales for it, he almost duplicated the feel of an older, thick Commander.

You have to hold them side by side to feel that the "AG" Commander is actually just a hair thicker then an old style. It actually feels perfect to me.
