Who do you think are the most promising new makers in the custom industry and why? You can name more than one just give your reasons for choosing them. What is there speciality?

I found a maker named GenO Denning (pronounced Jean-Oh) at the Southeast Custom Knife Show in Winston-Salem, NC a few weeks ago. He calls his company Caveman Engineering. He lives in SC and learned from Herron. He had some beautifully ground hunters on his table with micarta, Corian, stag, and other handles. The fit and finish was great, the tangs were very nicely tapered, and his use of colored spacers/liners gave just the right touch of color to the knives. The sheath work was very nice. Both the knives and sheaths have matching serial numbers. The knife also has the year in which it was made. And the best thing about the knives was the price - I paid only $80 apiece for the following two knives!

Several knowledgable people that I talked to at the show (including Darrel Ralph, Alan Folts, and Anthony Lombardo) were highly impressed that Denning was offering knives of such quality at that price.

He plans on having a website up and running in another month or two. He also had a prototype of a nice interframe folder that he plans of producing in about 4 months.

To top it all off, GenO was just a super person. I'd say that we'll certainly be hearing more from GenO in the near future.

Hi Kelly,
Nice knives....you have a gift at picking winners you know. Do you have this gent's contact number by any chance? I'd like to give him a buzz.

Thanks,

I would be very interested in how to contact this gentleman. It looks like he makes the kind of blades this hunter hungers for!

"I'm tired of going over this. They're INVESTMENTS!"

PS-they look very similar in design and price range to Wayne Hendrix's blades. Also the same region of the country. Hmmmmm...possible they learned from the same source?

John Fitch. Good design, good fit and finish, excellent performers.

I use one of his knives daily, and as a "standard" to judge my own as far as edge holding etc...

His 2 primary teachers are Jerry Fisk and Joe Flournoy (if we could all be so lucky!!).

He came in 2nd in the OPEN division of the last ABS cutting competition...he was using a bowie instead of some monstrous "ringer".

Also a good guy to talk with, willing to share knowledge etc....

Excellent prices.

Here's Denning's contact info:

Steve Corkhum of Hawk knives seems to be really cool. I met him at the Chicago Knife show, and his knives are beautiful. He uses the traditional clay hardening method on his blades, and you can see the hamon on each blade. His newest model is a heavy duty tanto shaped blade. You can check it out at www.hawkknives.com

Got to agree with RML on John Fitch - just the camp knife I was looking for - fantastic work and a good egg to boot. John and a famous Bowie nut

Boyd Ashworth is another to consider for folders.
Mark Green is making some nice tactical (but non bead blasted) knives at reasonable prices.

I'll be listed in this thread someday!!!

I am starting to see knives from a maker named Jason Jacks. There are a few on Larry Connelley's knifeart.com site. I also saw a few in person at the Orlando show recently. Anyone else have experience with this maker?

Dang, Rob, I wish you had mentioned Deryk about 10 years ago (when he was about 12

), so maybe I could have afforded to buy one. Very nice knives. Definitely somebody to keep an eye on.
