Hey all, I just wanted to show the progression of my work. Some of you expressed interest in it, so I thought I would post some pictures.

The picture below is my first attempt at pattern welding different types of metal. This blade is 1095 and pure nickel. It was supposed to be a ladder pattern, pretty damn ugly if you ask me. This one was drawn and folded by hand. Tons of cold shuts.

The next picture is of my second attempt at a ladder pattern. It is 1095 and pure nickel sheet with 198 layers. Not too bad looking. No cold shuts, but I really screwed up the grind on this one. The major difference between this one and my first one was the use of the power hammer. It made a huge difference, as you can see.

The next one is my first attempt at a twist pattern. It was going to be a chevron twist, but I got carried away with the power hammer and it ended up being a three bar twist. I had to add the two shims between the bars because nickel will not stick to nickel. There are 99 layers of 1095 pure nickel in each bar. 40 HRC

The next picture may look familiar to some of you. It is from my first completed knife. Chevron twist of 51 layers of 1095 and 15N20. 60HRC

And last but not least, my work in process. This one is a six bar Persian Twist. Each bar has 34 layers of 1095 and 15N20. By far the most material consuming so far. I lost about 75% of the original billet through welding, drawing, cutting, and grinding.

What’s next? I don’t know. I need to do some single edged knives to pay off some favors I owe to people who have helped me set up my little basement shop. What pattern do you all think will look the best in a Bowie style knife?

Great progression, the patterns get better each time! Not many people start out with patterned damascus and double edged grinds. I'm impressed.

I'd vote for "pool and eye" pattern for the Bowie.

Ya know something Laredo, sometimes I get idea that you're just TRYING to annoy us. ;)

Just kidding, they look great to me. and keeping picture history of your work is something I've been doing too, help me see where I'm improving, and where I still need to work on things.

And jsut lets me show people my work. :)

Wow, are you doing some nice stuff there. The damascus disease is brutal, and as you mentioned, it's hard to want to work on just "plain knives" after you make a few damascus. One interesting pattern for a big bowie might be pool and eye in the center, and ladder pattern the edges. I tried it on a seven inch blade, and it looked very cool. Unfortunately, I sold the blade unfinished, and never got a picture. Good luck, and keep up the great work. Clint
