I read only one thread on this knife. When did it come out? Is it a new design? How good is it? Has anyone else tryed one?

I got a R2 a few weeks back, i love it.
If you go the Spyderco Factory forum there are a lot of threads on it.

.

The original “R” was first available during the late 90s and the entire knife was skeletonized, including the blade. 1,200 pieces were manufactured, 600 serrated and 600 plain edge. The “R” 2 was released in August 2005 in the same quantities, but this time, only the handle was skeletonized. The blade has a slightly different shape and the handle is gray anodized instead of black.

It was one of the Sprint Runs announced earlier this year. Shipped around the beginning of September.

Other fairly major differences between the original and the R2 are that the R2 blade is flat ground of VG-10 while the original R was hollow ground ATS-34. The skeletonizing of the blade of the original R exended so far onto the tang that there was no room for Spyderco's name! The clips on them were, to my knowledge, the only clips to carry both the bug logo and the SPYDERCO name. Minor difference would be that, on the original, all screw heads except the blade pivot screw were Phillips while the R2 is all Torx.

I got myself an R2 with plain edge on Saturday. The blade shape is similar to the Calypso which is pretty cool. Also consider that the handle is aluminium and skeletonized, so weight is really negligible:thumbup:

Slick, you said only 600 PE plus 600 SE were made. If I may ask, where did you get that info? And if that's a fact, then I reckon i got myself a nice collectable, at least it will be in a few years :D

This information has been provided by Spyderco & Co. and could be found on the Spyderco.com forum. Also, most of the Spyderco fans can vouch for this information as well.
