The Sebenza Hype?

No, I'm not trolling. This message is for those forumites that have read everything posted about the Sebenza, questioned those posts (including myself), questioned the cost, but never handled one. I was not a critic of CRK, not at all, just skeptical. Couldn't bring myself to justify the cost for just "another folder".

Went to the gun/knife show in Kansas City, (the last one before the end of the year). Decided to take along my NIB Mictrotech Mini Socom Auto (might trade or sell it). I have attended these shows for years, in the last three years I've never seen a Sebenza on anyone's table. This year, I ask around and there is one guy that has a couple. I find him because I want to see what all the hype is on these Sebenza's. There was no crowd around his table, just those passing by. He had the typical assortment of new folders you see nowadays. I asked to see one of the small Sebenza's and you would have thought I wanted to take out one of his ugly sisters for a walk in the moonlight! This guy was beaming that anyone even asked about them.

Well, I don't follow anyone. Basically a maverick in my own right. For all those forumites that didn't buy into the quality of Chris Reeves Knifes, let me tell you something. Before you question the next thread as to the quality, workmanship, and cost of the Sebenzas, PUT ONE IN YOUR HAND!

I was prepared for the BG42 blade, the blade finish treatment, the titanium slabs, yadda, yadda, yadda. What I wasn't prepared for was the way it felt. The edges have a radius on them that literally feels like they are molded to your hands. NO SHARP EDGES, other than on the blade edge where it is supposed to be. I chose the small Sebenza for the first venture.

This dealer was a nice guy and it definitely appeared to me that I was the first interested party during the show to ask to handle one (or at least show interest in buying). I had gotten a "real deal" on the mini Socom auto and was prepared to pony up real bucks for booty on trade for the Sebenza. The dealer came back with a difference offer that I couldn't believe. All I can say was it was one hellava offer. I snapped it up! The dealer was ecstatic ove r the trade. He needed the Mini Socom Auto to generate traffic to his table and I WANTED THAT SEBENZA! Good deal for both parties.

The moral of the story guys is that I now know why the Sebenza and Chris Reeves Knives have such a reputation! ITS NOT HYPE--ITS THE REAL THING (I haven't even tried the service piece offered by CRK). So forumites that want a Sebenza that justify the price, take some of those new folders you've bought over the past year that are still in boxes and run down to your next gun/knife show. Who knows you may have been saving up for a Sebenza all this time and you never knew it! Happy Holidays to all--I've got my wish! This is now the best Christmas ever!

Which Sebenz did you get? The plain one he had, or one of the 3 decorated ones? You're lucky he worked with you on the price, usually he won't budge. That's also why he's had those for EVER now...hahaha. (Seems that way anyhow.) I also was looking at the large decorated one in the middle there on Sat. Also, their will soon be more Sebenza's and other Chris Reeve Knives at the K.C. show.

Didn't you have a table there near the escalator? I don't think this dealer is a current CRK dealer, but maybe he was. I know he wanted my Mini SoCom auto more than the Sebenza--my treat!

Tangus, I am just grinning from ear to ear over your story. I am glad to hear you like the knife and were able to walk away with a good deal. There will be no looking back.

stjames,

Every once in a while I'll wake up and observe what the rest of the world is doing. Glad I woke up on this one. I am really impressed with this folder! I've been playing with it all day, hence, if there are misspellings in my postings, its because I can't put this d___n knife down!

Yep, sure did I was only there for a few hours on Sat. though. Thrilled to know a fellow knife-nut and "Kansas Citian" is now carrying a Sebenza. I think it's great!

Jedi, there be many more where he came from, the knife is just plain made well!
I've had hundreds of knives, and none have made the impression on me as these have. Sorry if you don't feel the same, but, hey, everyone is different, that's why there are so many different makers out there selling knives! It's great! Thanks to all you makers out there, keep it up and there are a lot of new makers every day, check out the Shop Talk forum to see some new talent on the horizon, and take advantage NOW before they become SOMEBODY and we can't wait or afford what they have to offer.

Saw and handled all three sizes at the Timonium, Maryland show Sunday before last. Now I know what you guys are talking about. Understated elegance and purposeful simplicity. Nice knives. Someday (sigh).

Some guys have all the luck.

Oh no... now you've done it Tangus. There's no going back now. Get ready to watch your other folders disappear, while you attain more Sebenzas.

Jedi Knife--I suppose by acquiring a small sebenza one could say that I said "yes" to Chris Reeves. But, then, I've said 'yes' to other blade makers. I will recognize quality when I run across it. Sort of giving credit where credit is due. If you haven't handled one of those sebenzas, its hard to refute the masses that appreciate this knife. Take heart Jedi, I have moved from the dark side on several occassions and have made it back to the light. The trip ain't so bad!

JohnYKwst--You know the funniest thing about what you said has already began. It's difficult to sit back and not compare the quality of folders to Sebenza (but then they didn't cost that much either). Matter of fact, I sort of traded myself into it. Glad I did. Has now become my primary carry. I'm now in the process of making myself a belt sheath of rich, butternut colored leather to house this little beauty. I've made similiar such sheaths for the rest of my folders when I carry them, but this one for the Sebenza will be special!

Happy Holidays to All

Welcome to realizing that a few things are as good as advertised.

I've carried all sorts of expensive and "reasonable" knives over the years and have a silly number of choices of what to carry when I get up in the morning. My medium Sebenza is what goes into my pocket most of the time. I carry it into places where I've got to wear special protective clothing just to enter. I carry it when I hike. I carry it around the house. I know that it will perform each and every time and that if I have to abuse it it will still work.

My mother used to tell me that I was so frugal that I could make Jefferson wince from my squeezing a nickle so hard, but I never have considered the money I spent on my Sebenza to have been waisted.

Take care,

Mike

Mike, you're right! I've never minded what I spent for an item as long as it measured up to the claims and it was quality built. Kind of rare in these times.

TANGUS,
That's good to hear. I just recently got a large Sebenza and absolutely love it. The small Sebenza is now at the top of my wish list. Be careful you can get addicted.

Ted

Hey Ted, I know what you mean. As soon as I can afford it, I'll be looking for a large Sebenza. (Man, I can't get this monkey off my back-maybe, just maybe, I can find a knife to cut it off? That's it! that's the ticket--buy more knives and show the monkey i mean business!)

OK Tangus, first chance I get I'll handle
one. If I'm a new convert I'll have to eat
a lot of past rhetoric. Maybe looks ARE
deceiving.

Hey Shivey,
there's nothing worse than a "reformed hooker", I ought to know. I couldn't believe the cult-like following this knife was receiving. Just didn't sound American to me. Well, even a hayseed like me can appreciate the quality in this sebenza. Good thing I didn't feel the fever on this one until I was prepared to DEAL, otherwise I would really have been one disappointed puppy if I didn't bring this one home with me.
