How can Zebra Wood look so different on knives assembled just a couple miles apart?

I really like the Queen zebrawood. It's miles ahead of the grey birdseye maple they had the last couple of years.

The GEC is a great looking knife, but it DOES NOT look like any zebra wood I've ever seen. Maybe it's been dyed, but the point of zebra wood is to enjoy the natural grains.

I think the first picture is a much prettier wood then the second? That is an awful good question about the color variations.

Maybe it's to do with the section of wood used? Both look good in differing ways. I hear that ZB when sawn or sanded smells something terrible......
