Has anyone checked out the utilikilts at www.utilikilts.com ? They are kind of interesting, they pique my interest in my European heritage. Unfortunately, not practical for bike riding.

JK

They look pretty cool. I have a regular kilt, from J. Higgins. Kinda comfy.

Nice avatar, Jedi!

There had been a big discussion about this a while ago. Couldn't find it when I searched. Anyone still have a link to the old discussion, I think it was in community?

JK, I got mine a few months ago, the original in green camouflage in what they call Neo-traditional style, which wraps around and snaps shut (rather than the Standand style, which has a zip closure fly). Wearing it, I've raised a few eyebrows as can be expected, and it sure is a discussion starter. It's up to individual preference what to wear underneath it. At the minimum one wears just one's pride, as they say, but as winter has come on, long underwear wouldn't be amiss. As an option, the manufacturer offers "modesty snaps" so you can button up between your legs, and that might work if you bike. The kilt itself is very well made, the pockets are useful, and, as a whole, if the thought of snapping one around your waist doesn't bring a smile to your face, well, then I'd steer clear, for it isn't a cheap, as in inexpensive, thrill. Mine was the least pricey at around $100. Well, despite my username, I say bring on the haggis 'cause I sharpened up me dirk:D

(BTW, bfm, the thread you may be thinking of was back I think in August, and titled "Check out these britches")

Way to go, Ulsterman! Wear your kilt with pride- and a pair of Doc Martens in case you need to stomp anyone who hassles you too much!;)

That's great, wow :D I really need one of these! I have a kilt for use with my SCA reenactment group, and I love it, but it's not something I can wear on a regular basis! Thanks for the link, Jedi!

No problem, Peace Frog. I find the SCA interesting, especially being an edged tool enthusiast. Are you part of the Kingdom of Atlantia? Have there been any good SCA-related threads on BF anywhere?

JK

Well, I just joined up a few months ago, so I haven't been to any events yet, and most of my garb is being loaned to me. That said, it's a pretty cool group from my limited experience. Once we get our fencing equipment back (apparently we loaned it out over the summer) I'm going to start that. Yes, I'm in the Kingdom of Atlantia, Barony of Tir-y-Don, College of Renchester. I haven't seen any SCA threads on the forums, but I haven't gone out looking for any either. :)

BTTT for this one, too!

:D :)

That urban camo utilikilt is just too cool!

Got mine the other day and it's great!!

Love the looks people give me.

Great for the heat too! Who needs AC with a Utilikilt?

Those kilts look cool--literally--but why are they so expensive? How would one of these kilts differ from just borrowing one my sweetie's skirts?

I'm with Shane on this one...

That pic of the burly bald man in a kilt and docs was a rude awakening! ;)

Evolute,

According to the web site and after getting one, they are hand made and the pleats area ALL sewn. A LOT of work here. I really think that the value is pretty good for the buck.

It might be expensive, but it's worth it for the shock value of the average joe out there. I've never been one to conform to the "norm". Now to decide which one I'll get next.

Hmmm...

Got 5 now! Plus an Amerikilt.

Great for summer wear!

Check it out and get one of your own. Besides, you can wear you Skean Dhu in your sock and won't get looked at like you're stupid. Well, maybe not for the knife. But who cares what others think if you are comfortable.;)

The Celtic Games are coming to Richmond on the 26-27th of this month. I love going to see the events, Good food, and Cool stuff for sale, Music and atmosphere. Its one of the few places you can get Cops serving you hard liqueur. They ran the Irish coffee tent last year and that was some good stuff. Even though I really get into it. I would never wear a Kilt

i know a fair number of folks w/ Utilikilts and they all love them.

also wear kilts on weekends (10 year SCA veteran, Master of Arms), and to formal occasions (16oz. worsted Wallace).

still trying to work up the courage for a Utilikilt for daily wear. live in a pretty 'rednecky' area. but w/ a scottish lion tshirt and my Danner Quarrys on.....i wonder.
