I'm working on a 3 1/2"- 4" hunter that was forged to just under 1/4" thick, which I now realize is a bit thick for a knife of this length, and even with a nice looking distal taper it ended up with a real thick tip. Would putting a false edge on the top help?

Just grind it on down! That's not that much steel. Just do it.
