This looks like a Rescue Howler whistle?

It comes in black, red, International Orange, Yellow, White(I think) and something called Titanium Green(WTF is that?) The whistles themselves are $7.95, and come with a color coordinated lanyard for $9.95, I think, I am going off of memory from last week. You can buy them directly from Fox 40, the U.S. office is in the Niagara Falls region. It is on the website. They were unable to direct me to anyone who is carrying that model yet.

Thanks for the info. I'd like to see them come out with flourescent colors.
Glow in the dark yellow or white would be sweet.

Thanks,
Mith.

Is another name for flourescent, glow under black light orange. :D

how loud is the micro, compared to the mini or the original fox 40 (decibel rating for the same test equipment?)

I had an original a long time ago...

It is supposed to be the loudest whistle for its' size. Check out the Doug Ritter "PSP" at his site: http://equipped.com

Mith.

Yes, of course, but I wanted to know how loud it is compared to the original Fox and Fox mini under the same test conditions etc.

The Fox40 site lists coachdepot in their 'shop online' section, and the coach depot site says they have them for $7 but no shipping cost info can be found. I didn't want to go all the way through the shopping cart to find out either.

It is great that Fox40 is finally getting these out. Thanks again to Doug Ritter for prodding them along!

Hmm, maybe I can replace that Acme I was given at work with something that will actually work. .

I've used Acme since the 60's, I like them, IMHO any of the modern Acme Tornado models performs fine, my favorite is the Acme Tornado 2000 with sides filed down, I feel it is comparable to the Fox 40 but flatter (once you file down the sides).

Of course it depends on use, for refereeing or coaching I feel that the old bakelite pea Acme Thunderer is excellent, with better "talk" than any pealess, and you can get a small high pitch for outdoors/noisy crowds or a larger lower pitch for indoors.

Sorry to be late on this - but I found this at:

POCKET SURVIVAL PAK

QUOTE:
The Fox 40 Rescue Howler™ is a three-chamber, triple frequency whistle with the highest decibel level of any "slim" style whistle. The tested frequencies of the prototype are:

3934.61Hz
4087.36 Hz
4237.93 Hz

As for loudness, when measured in the same manner to the same weighted db scale (there is no industry standard), the Rescue Howler™ achieved a db rating of 110. This compares to the Fox 40 Classic and Mini-Fox 40 at 115 db and the Acme Tornado at 107 db.

Bear in mind that decibels are measured on a logarithmic scale, so that each decibel of difference is significantly more than the db numbers suggest on their face.

This is all well and good, but the true test is in the blowing and in field tests I conducted the Fox 40 Rescue Howler™ was substantially louder than the Acme and ACR whistles and could be readily heard from approximately 20% further away under a variety of circumstances. That’s an increase worth blowing your horn about, if you’ll pardon a bad pun.

I also did a Froogle.com search for the Fox 40 Rescue Howler whistle and found some listings at $8-9...... which is pretty high, considering one can find the Fox 40 Mini for $3.10 and the Classic for $3.60 - both of which are supposed to be noticably louder (by +5db) - and both can be made noticably smaller by cutting/filing down the (functionless) side plates that make them imitate a conventional whistle shape.

but this is a whistle designed for more of a select crowd, and will not get the responses necessary for a wide appeal.

It is very thin, and you can put it in your pocket or wherever you choose to place it, and it will not create the "lump" that even a cut down Fox 40 mini has a tendency to. It is brand new, and therefore Fox is trying to recoup the R&D expense as soon as possible. Molds for this type of plastic object tend to run in the $50,000 to $100,000 arena, depending on type, and it is reasonable that the manufacturer would like to get the money back as soon as possible. It is also reasonable to assume that once this expense is recouped that the price will slowly go down. I bought 3 fwiw.

Actually I looked at the listings - and one was $7.95 for a "Bonus 2 pack!" (shipping at $4.95).

Also there was some conflicting information to that reported above:

Fail-safe, pea-less FOX 40 micro design
Ultralight, slim design whistle tested at 122 decibel - louder then the larger FOX 40 Classic!
Tripe frequently whistle produces sound that will rise above man-made or crowd noise and will cary for over one mile!

Is this actually possible  - the Fox 40 Rescue Howler whistle rates at 122db some +7db LOUDER than the Fox 40 Classic?

Be real interested if anyone has the Fox 40 Rescue Howler - how loud it actually is compared to a Fox 40 Classic........

I still like the Acme Tornado 2000, it is said to give 125 decibels, this is not the same as the better known Tornado 636 (the one mentioned with the 107 decibels), here's an interesting link:

http://www.themoneybag.com/vb/archive/index.php/t-16061.html

About pea whistles, did you see that scene in Titanic where the girl blows on the whistle and gets rescued ?, that was an Acme Thunderer whistle and it is much easier to get some sound out of it with little breath than with a pealess. My daughter used to go camping a couple of times a year when she was younger and I always gave her an Acme pea whistle to take, easier to blow, can be heard from quite far, does not hurt her ears when blown and cheaper too.

I have both an Acme Thunderer and a Fox 40 Classic. The Acme is easier to blow.

Thanks for the clarification between Tornado models and the link, Luis.

Which model of the Acme Thunderer do you prefer?

Thanks

My current favorite Acme Thunderer (and pea whistle in general) is the Polycarbonate 560, with the famous brass 60.5 running a close second, the older standard Thunderer (now renamed "Titanic" because it is the model originally sold to the White Star line and used in the Titanic) is also very good but more expensive, it was my first Acme Whistle back in the 60's. The inexpensive 660 is cheap plastic but a very good whistle available in lots of colors.

I took a couple of pictures of some of my whistles but am having trouble openning the Tinypic hosting page that I use, when solved I will post in a new thread so as not to Highjack this one further.

Diggin' up old posts. .

Anyway, I got a Micro from Fox40 and have been evaluating it for a month or so. It's tiny, about the same size as the Acme Tornado 636 but with no sharp edges. Very easy to carry. The thing I really like about the Mini is that it can be used two different ways - loud and painful. When I'm just trying to get somebody's attention, I cover the top holes and give a short quick blow, which results in a high-pitched steady tone that carries pretty well. Uncover the top holes and give it a blow, and you're going to cringe in that loud-whistle kind of way. Really nice, I think. I am the envy of my coworkers who aren't in a position to replace their issued whistles the way I am . .
