I have a knife with a nice matte bead blasted blade. I was wondering if you used some gun blue and applied it to the blade with an applicator, could you create the striped/camo effect like those found on some of the high end knives?

I don't know about matte bead blasted finish, but you can cetainly do it on satin/mirror finish. But using the knife often will remove the blued effect.

Knives with a bead blast finish are typically made of stainless steel, and cold gun blue won't work on stainless. Is your knife stainless?

How does Strider Knives do it? Some kind of external coating, as opposed to altering the metal itself, I guess.

It is my understanding that with Strider knives the "tiger stripe" affect is created because the entire blade is turned dark during the heat treating process, and then they remove part of the darkness to create the "tiger stripes". I could be wrong, but I seem to remember reading this somewhere.
