If that was one of the commandments,I sure would be racking up the sins!
High on my Schrade wants list is a PH1,a 165,and one of Codger's 152's.
The seller of this 165 has extraordinary specimens of all three listed:

Now,I would expect that this baby will climb out of my price range, but I was wondering if anybody had any experience with sheepshorn handles and how they would survive some everyday use?
Whoever's collection these knives came from, sure had good taste!
Merry,Merry Christmas !!

I suspect all three of these are rehandle jobs. Look at the rivets... Schrade work? I don't THINK so.

Are these things worth a premium? Well, if I thought they were genuine factory issue/prototypes and there was some kinda documentation, or at least an excellent chance they were, I'd bid. But someone skilled with tools can do a re-handle, look at the nice job our Codger does. These do look good, however. Nice workmanship, judging by the photos.

Be fun to watch how they do.

Relodr, you still looking for a Sharpfinger? Email me.

Phil,
Thanks for the insight and the benefit of your expertise!
That goes to show everybody that a greenhorn like me should not be let out of the house with money in my pocket! The first flashy lady, with a good story would clean me out in no time.
I was wondering why a serious collector would not keep documentation, boxes, etc.
Thanks again! I'll be sending an e-mail after the holidays!
Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas !

It is an interesting rehandle Ron and Phil. I do believe you are correct. I have more than twelve 165OT variants, and they all use the same compression rivets, some are brass, some are nickle silver, all flush, none domed, and none filed flush with the material. I do not know the PH1's well enough to comment on them, but you have not seen my bid on the sheephorn 165, and won't. Not that it isn't a nice knife. It just does not say "Schrade produced" to me.

Guess I shoulda' clicked on to enlarge, looks like two nickel/silver or stainless pins and a brass one in the middle. :o
Turquoise?

It's probably been a couple of months, but I bought a Turquoise handled 165OT. It looked decent enough in the photo to entice me, but when it came, it was a major disappointment. The blade was pitted and the handles were both badly cracked and just held together with glue. It represents my biggest knife-buying mistake and a good reminder that not all is what it seems when buying on eBay. If I can find it, I'll post a pic, but don't hold your breath. ;)

Yes, in that case, my friend William "took a bullet" for the old Codger. Like the knife that started this thread, I just felt something was not quite right when I saw it. I've had a few dissapointments with my eBay purchases as well. But in the scheme of things, the good has far outweighed the bad. BRL, bless his sarcastic heart, has said time and again to "read the knife", and that is good advice. Our own LT agrees with that advice, and it is a lesson well taken to heart. Seller hype, the modern equivilant of a P.T. Barnum, can obscure the details of what a knife truely is. And as LT has also pointed out, examining and becoming familiar with a known original (stamps, blades, handle materials) knife helps greatly.

All that said, there is nothing wrong with "pimped" Schrades, home made or purchased, just be realistic in your expectations!

Codger

Right you are Codger. I'd like to buy that knife knowing that it's been re-handled, but I'm not going to get a 2nd mortgage to do it. I can take some comfort in the fact that when it comes to buying stuff on eBay, there are bigger fools than me. :D

Hey guys, don't get down on pimped Schrades. I'm expecting that 162 blank I sent off a few weeks ago to arrive any day complete with fancy ass scales and complete file work. Of course, this was a factory blank to begin with so I guess dolling it up is okay.
