Hey everyone,

Let me tell you what I'm looking for and what I want to do with it and perhaps some of you can help a fresh fish prepare for his first swim in the custom lake :)

I want a fixed blade for edc that will be chiefly used for utility but also for defense if the situation ever arises. I want a good steel that will hold an edge and a blade style that will be easy to sharpen. I'm not sure on the size, but I was thinking a blade that is a little longer than 3 inches. A good sheath with multiple carry options is also a plus. I'm looking to spend 200 dollars or less... preferrably closer to 150. Can it be done?

I was looking at the Wharnecliffe blade style. Would this be good for what I'm going to do or is there another style that you feel would suit me better?

I was looking at a Murray Carter knife here http://www.bladeart.com/artists/murry_carter/murry_carter.htm

It is at the bottom, the Ironwood Warnecliffe. I like how it looks, I usually don't like the way the Warnecliffe style looks but this one just appeals to me. What do you guys and gals think?

Any input will be gladly appreciated. Take care.

I like your initial choice. The knife itself is functional and appealing, and all that from a Mastersmith at $160.00? Damn right deal.

You'll get one hundred similar suggestions, but I'll bet none of them will exceed this one. Good choice.

You should also check out The Legionnaire by Crawford. I have a black DLC coated one. It is a great utility knife that takes and holds a razor edge. Here is a link;

I also have a SWEET warncliff blade from Crawford called the Kasper Cutter. He does not advertise that one any longer. I will email a pic to anyone who can post it.
Stay Sharp,

I'd also suggest looking closely at what Bob Dozier makes...fits the bill perfectly, but your first choice was a darn good one.

A good knife for your purposes would be any of the Boker / Bud Nealy knives. They have blades in two or three different styles and Bud's MultiCarry System allows you to carry at least nine ways. Prices range from about $60.00 to around $200.00.

Murray makes a fine knife at a good price, but a wharnecliffe is kind of a specialized blade shape. It will do some things much better than others and it would not be my first, second, or third choice for a self defense blade. But, that is why I carry two. :)

I agree that the wharncliffe is more specialized and you seem to want to do more than that blade allows where a hunter/skinner might do more. I have handled Murray's knives and they are nice. I would pick one of the ones up higher on that site or a Bob Dozier is also a very good choice as a couple mentioned.
