I recently saw this knife Special Ops Utility Knife for sale at a decent price($65.00) and was wondering if it was worth acquiring.
Does anyone have one of these or have you had one of these and what are your impressions.
TIA

Hi Scarman,

I bought one of these units awhile back. I keep it in one of the coats that I use when I go hiking. As it's very slim and light, I slip it into the outer breast pocket of the jacket - don't even know it's there. Being coated ATS-34, I don't have to worry about any maintenance either (at least so far).

As far as a using knife, well, I'm not really partial to the skentonized handle (too many hard edges) and I doubt the wire cutter is of much use in the real world (I don't have a need for it anyway, and the opening pokes into my large hand).

The blade cuts and slices pretty good. I really haven't used it very much though; it's there just in case, and I chose it because of its thinness, light weight and corrosion resistance (and I got a pretty good deal on it to).

Hope this helps.

Darren

$60 is still a little high for sale price. I got on on sale from Smokey Mountain at $45.00.

To be honest with you, I don't see it very useful. The coating scratched very easily.

Darren,

Thanks for the reply. It does give me something to go on.

Dew,

How was it as a user, I mean besides the coating scratching easily?

I had one a while ago, and the comment about the coating scratching off easily is true. I didn't think the grinding was as clean as it could have been. The edge was very rough and the hollow grind was slightly uneven. It isn't very hard either 56-57 Rc, I know ATS-34 should be a couple marks higher, since the knife isn't ment for any chopping. But I liked the knife over all for the 45 dollar price. Knifeco has it on sale for 42 right now. The sheath is kind of neat if you plan on strapping it to your calf or something. Also, the knife is thin because it has no handle slabs or anything, but the blade is 3/16 thick, and pretty wide for a knife that size in my opinion.

I couldn't say it better than the comment above. On my camping trip I used it as backup, ex. for digging and such. I don't recommend the knife for your only survival tool. Chopping with this knife is the last thing I want to do.

The opportunity to "modify" this knife is outstanding...if you choose to of course. I have one and love it. After using a friend's I had to get one myself. He has now had a sheath made that holds the knife and a Leatherman...Great concept/idea. I was going to have one made but got tied up with my boring job and never got back to it...Now I'm home and will be trying to get back in touch with the sheath maker.
