Throwing the Bushman Bowie

Here's the deal. I'm going to buy one of the Cold Steel Bushman knives, but I'm not yet sure on which one to buy. I've heard some great reviews about the bowie style blade, and that's the one I'm planning on getting. Now I've seen the video that Cold Steel made where they have a guy throwing the bushman, but it's not the bowie blade. I was wondering if the Bushman Bowie will throw just as well as the plain old bushman. I've also noticed that the Bowie weighs about .2 oz less than the other. But I seriously doubt that such a little difference in weight would affect throwing too dramatically. Any information on this would be great:)

All knives can be thrown if you know what you are doing. Read or watch a how to video is fine, but practice is the only way. The good thing about the high carbon blades is that they will very rarely take any kind of deformation from throwing, and if they break most sellers will replace the knife. Put your dominant leg back, get a horserider type stance, put the non-throwing hand below the throwing hand for balance, cock the thrower back by your ear (don't stab yourself please) and let the knife fly out of your hand. Any type of putting a "spin" on the throw will ruin the throw. It should more or less "slip out with ease toward the target" ending with you looking down your arm directly at the target. Find information on throwing tomahawks, shuriken from ninjutsu, and other forms. Espescially from Masaaki Hatsumi. He's the last real Ninja from Japan.

Take it easy as throwing "harder" only makes your aim worse. It should all be smooth like you could keep throwing all day. I have some books and manuals that I could trade you for or something of the sort.

Repeated practice and a love for throwing are what will make your aim lethal.

I was just worried about it, because I got a different knife with a tanto blade and tried to throw it, but it spun really weird. I have a knife I use for throwing that I'm really used to and I guess the tanto was just weighted weird. Plus I think it's harder to stick the tanto because you have to be really accurate to hit it right on the tip. My throwing knife, though, I can throw it at 3, 5, and 8 steps away. I can pretty much estimate when I'm 3 and 5 steps away. 8 is tricky. I actally throw my knife exactly like you explained. Thanks for the information, I guess I'll just go ahead and buy the bowie style blade then.:D

it should do fine. The heavier and longer the blade, the easier it will be to throw with repeatable results. If you are only getting it for throwing you might want to look at their perfect balance thrower. it is a heavy bowie style thrower. I throw a lot of their hawks. I use one of the GI tanto's for throwing. it works good, but would be better if longer and heavier. I modded mine to make it easier for throwing. Ground off the top guard and replaced the cord wrapped handle with a ton of electrical tape for more weight.

Nice GI Tanto. The COld Steel Series are great throwers, light survival knives for cheap. Lost my True Flight Thrower and was going to get a Tanto. Great 1095's for the right price. And CS will replace anything you can break, so who can beat that?

The handle weight is the factor in how hard the knife will stick and dig into a target. The bushman handle can be filled with gear and stopped up with a rubber stopper from Hdepot like someone posted a while back.

Man that knife there looks like a great thrower! I wouldn't just get the bushman for throwing, but that would be one of the big reasons. I just like the look of it, and I'm kind o excited to make it into a spear:D I also might make a little kit to put into the handle. I read somewhere about putting a bike tire tube around the handle for better grip and a little more weight, I might try that. So do you find that it's harder to throw a tanto blade than a normal drop point blade? It seems like it would be.

Tanto seems the same to throw if not a little easier b/c all the weight goes to the small tip of the tanto point if thrown right. I can throw my TOPS Anaconda with great accuracy and the weight really drives the point in there.

A TOPS knife.. I"m not too familiar with those, all I know is that the guy in that movie "The Hunted" uses one, and it looks like the most amazing knife ever! He throws it like crazy.

the hunted knife was designed by tom brown and weighs as much as some hawks
so i would asume you could really stick it
