Has anyone (Ralph?) tried to throw up a flight of steps? Up a hill? It's hard.

Downstairs is hard, too.

It seems like it might be important to have that ability in a real combat/self-defense situation.

It's not only true in throwing weapons, but archery and firearms too: you have to modify your aim points when moving up or moving down terrain.

Typically, you need to aim even higher when moving up, and often aim a bit lower than usual when moving down.

Of course, this depends on the gradient of the terrain; on a smoother slope, you may not need to modify whatsoever. On a steeper slope, you may need to modify a lot.

I don't remember ever trying to throw upstairs, but I live in a very hilly area, so I've thrown uphill many times. It reduces your range, of course, and your power. As far as the self defense aspect is concerned, anybody uphill or upstairs from you has a big advantage anyway, so my first thought would be to try to level the playing field before I even attempted an aggressive action on them -- in other words, don't waste a knife trying to throw from such a disadvantageous position.

Very interesting observation, though.
