Tilley Hats from Canada?

I have been getting sun burned pretty bad lately on the back of my neck so, I started looking for a better hat to work in. The Tilley's seem to be the ones that offer the best value in terms of build quality, durability and, overall function.

Anybody out there own one and wish to comment on it? I'm looking for long term usuage here in an everyday wear situation. Here in Arizona, I tend to sweat profusely when I get sun burned working outside so, I'm guessing I will need to wash it often (maybe once a week).

Also, a point of curiosity. Why the ~$20US price difference between Canada and the USA markets? Wasn't NAFTA supposed help ease trade across common borders? Specifically, one hat I was looking at was $60Can and $64US. Is Canadian freight and custom that expensive?

Thanks!

Sid:

I don't own a Tilley, but my father does, my sister, my bro-in-law, my professor at the University owns 2...

I bet that if you do purchase a Tilley, you'll be more than satisfied with it. They are incredible hats, and guaranteed for life. Even if you lose your hat, you can get it replaced. The Tilley people are really neat to deal with, and I believe all of their stores are family owned. I've been in one, and they sure have some nice stuff.

About the free trade stuff, I have no clue! It works the same going the other way across the border too. Many things have 2 prices on them here too, one Canadian, one American, and we pay extra for the American goods. For a shock, go look at the shipping rates at www.1sks.com to Canada. Because of insurance and all that crap, I'd have to pay $18 to ship a product from 1sks to Canada! I think that NAFTA works for the larger side o business (manufacturing, big business between NAFTA partners, etc.) while NAFTA does little for the guy in American wanting to buy a hat from Canada, or the Canadian wanting to buy a Camillus slipjoint but not wanting to pay as much in shipping as the knife costs :)

Once again though, go ahead and buy a Tilley (shop around, you may find one cheaper.) They really are great hats and well worth the money.

Second the Tilley. Great hat. I've had mine for, jeez, must be 6 years now. The brown colour has faded, but otherwise it's good as new. After cuttin a big pile of my hair off, the hat was a bit big, so I tried my darndest to shrink it. No chance, it didn't shrink a millimeter.

Don't get me started on NAFTA.

Got a Tilley about 3 weeks back as a present from my wife.

She paid about $67.00 in UK terms.
I'd recommend it [but try and pay less...]

Got a T3 back in 99. First outing with it it was lost. So I used their loss insurance and got a replacement at 1/2 price. PRetty cool. I have had that hat ever since and it is great for fishing, outside work, etc. I got an olive one, but am thinking the khaki with the dark inside brim is the way to go.

Sid,
Tilley's are nice, but also check out the Ultimate Hat
I have one and love it.
Very similar to the Tilley, but about $10 less.
