Hey guys, please post if you would prefer 1/8" or 3/32". Im thinking about trying out water jet. I can order a large sheet of steel and have a ton less waste. Im finding out about the cost now but if its affordable I might go that route. They can do the profiling and do the holes or skeletonizing even. The cost of getting it done might be more, but it will save time and Ill get more knives out of a single sheet or bar of steel. That way all I have to do is heat treat and grind the blade and they will all be the exact same.

I thought I'd post a couple pics in hand and in the tin for size reference to help everyone get a perspective on how much (or how little) cutting edge you get with my design. Some people want more blade, so one of the other designs might make a better choice for you. I always like to see "In Hand" pics to get an idea for size because I have XXL glove hands and finding handles big enough for me is tough. I also drew on some thin twine/wire wrapping to get an idea of how that might look too.

Good Luck fellas and I want one of whatever model get's selected by everyone here...I'd be stoked with ANY of 'em!!!!

All the Best,

Stump

Thanks Bill & Chris,I can't believe one of mine made it to the finals.
1/8 is fine for a tin knife,it'll take up less room & leave more for other things in the tin.
There're just tin knives after all, made to be lashed to a stick for a spear or just to lengthen the handle & 1/8 will be better for that.
Check out youtube for tin knife handles.

You going to go with 1095 Chris?

Yeah, I think so Mykel. I know the heat treat on that steel best.

They were all great little peices, Enjoyed the whole deal guys!

#3 in 3/32"....*Big Paw Syndrome*.

Love the other designs, too, but I have *B.P.S.*

Wow, looks like this poll reflects my thoughts on the knives ( 9 / 7 / 9 ) . . . all of them are great models and would be great to use in a mini tin kit . . . .
B.P.T.S. has "Altoid's" tins on their website. They have two different size models to use. The smaller of the two is a regular "Altoid's" tin, which is 3 3/4" x 2 3/8" x 7/8" outside dimension. They also have a larger version which measures 4 3/8" x 3 1/4" x 1 1/16". I ordered two of each a few weeks ago, and you can get quite a bit more "stuff" into the larger one, plus they have a rubber seal on the lid that seals them tight. Add a Ranger Band around them and you are good to go.
Thanks to Chris for this great idea to start off 2012, (nice follow up to the Christmas exchange I might add), and thanks to BA, Daniel, & the Moose for taking the time to start our new year off with a new toy to play with . . . . .
Congrats as well to the three design winners, but after one of these is made, we all will be "winners" . . . . :D
Be safe.

This is really cool! I vote for #2 in 1/8" I really like that design.

Back in December I posted this over on the ESEE forums. I had a small piece of 1/8" 1095 left over and cut this just un 3-3/4". I've been sharing pictures of patterns I've been working on with Bill so I thought I'd through this up here in the tin discussion. I only made the one and don't really plan on making many more so I might as well share.

Im going to try and keep them at 30 or 35 shipped

The voting has been very close all the way through thus far.

Just gonna have to make all 3! :p

Here's an updated picture with holes in the handle. It is shown in 3/32 but I actually think 1/8 might be better because it has a high enough grind to accommodate it. Edge length is 1.5" by the way.

I also took some pics of a 'prototype' if you can call it that. :D I have medium hands and can fit 3 fingers fairly easily on it.

I just voted for number one and seeing the pic ol_sc posted makes me happy that was my choice. Looks like a good grip and some protection for your index finger. I like the other two designs quite a bit too, but it looks like it would be pretty easy to accidentally cut your index finger when using them. Maybe if they had some sort of a small guard?

#1 has taken a commanding four vote lead! Well, the way this poll is going four votes is alot! Its been tight the whole time.
