I found this at a local knife show a couple years ago, has anyone seen anything like it or maybe help with its origins, etc? It is a well made hatchet, head is 3" by 1 3/4", unmarked, carbon steel, takes and holds a good sharp edge. It came with a broken 11 1/2" hammer-type handle. The guy I got it from seemed to think it was used by a trapper, seems small enough to be useful for dismembering small game quickly. Anybody got a clue?

I can't locate your picture. Is it like this one?

If so it's a tiny trapper's hatchet.

Your server isn't allowing outside linking. If you email me the pic I'll put it up.

I did a little cropping to get the picture of the hatchet to fit in. Let's have a look..

The main shot shows a well proportioned but tiny hatchet - about like mine.
The next hopefully shows some of the head detail:

I was quite surprised with the example that I got - the blue coated hatchet a few posts up. Mine was quite a bit thicker than this appears, but still weighs in at 10oz total with sheath. The steel in mine is on a par with older Plumb hatchets etc.. I put a bevel on mine and it chopped far in excess of my expectations! Those who have the Gransfors mini hatchet will have a good idea of just what is possible.
As far as I've been able to discover, these were sold and used as trapper's hatchets - so the GB mini hatchet certainly isn't a new idea. These hatchets are neat - and it's a pity that so few seem to exist any more for collecting.
