Tips on improving lockback action?

I've only got one gripe with my new Calypso: it's got a pretty tight action. I've hit it with some Teflon lubricant, some Rem Oil, and been working it like crazy, but I'm not making much progress. My girlfriend's Calypso Jr. has the best action I've ever seen on a production lockback, so I know it's not the micarta against steel construction. Maybe I'm being too uptight, but with a light handle like this you need a good action to use the "drop" method of opening.

My next move would be to clamp the locking bar down and leave it that way for a few days. Anybody got a better idea?

I've heard of people putting a mildly abrasive polishing compound on lock backs and working the blade back in forth to smooth up the action. Then you just wash the knife off and relube it. I would be a little concerned about the compound working it's way into the micarta on this knife though.

I'd suggest give it a good cleaning to remove the lubricants and then working it.

The lubricants will hinder the parts smoothing and mating together. I never oil a new folder until I'm happy with its action. It doesnt seem to take long, because if your like me I will tend to play a new knife to death.

Ive heard of people using abrasives as well -but I'm extremely wary of this.

Maybe the good folks at Spyderco have some advice.

Corduroy,

Sorry to tell you this, but it's hopeless. There's absolutely no way to improve the action, no matter how hard you try. I highly recommend you to get rid of this knife. The stiff action makes your Calypso totally worthless. Worse yet, it is much worse than worthless: it is downright hazardous to your physical/mental/spiritual wellbeing! I'm sure your moral conscience will not allow you to sell it or trade it: you're just passing on the bad Karma to some unsuspecting soul. May I humbly suggest that I be the one to lift this burden off your shoulders? Email me for my address.

I've had the same problem with my old Micarta Big Goddard (#0882). Don't worry. It will loosen up after a while. I also used RemOil. But be careful! It will make Micarta slippery. Once, my finger slipped as I was opening the blade, and I cut the back of my thumb (!?).

Corduroy: do clean it first, then try some toothpaste!(not gel).

Slojocrow: checker it!(see BCaffreys recent thread on "Checkering the Native").

Nakano,

Thanks for the suggestion, but I can't bear the thought of marring the shiny black surface of my Goddard handle. Besides, I really like the jugged serration scar on my thumb. It gives me the rugged macho look that I always wanted to have.

VG-10 (440V!), G10 Calypso/Jr. (for that matter, Goddard also) would be really nice for high-end. (I know, I know, more SKUs.)
