The internet allows people from as far away as Turkey, Finland, the UK....to play in this big old sandbox we call BladeForums.
We get to talk with Sal Glesser, Kit Carson, Kevin Cashen, Tom Mayo, Ed Fowler, Ed Schempp, Nick Wheeler.......( I am truly not purposely leaving any names out here, but the list could go on forever) and everybody gets treated pretty equally.
We get to ask questions that we could not ask before, and we get quality answers. The Forums have helped to raise the bar on what is possible in knives, and to educate all of us, much quicker than was possible before the internet. For the most part, people are who they say the are, we don't have to worry that it is an 8 year old girl pretending to be a 30 year old man.
Terms like "carbon migration", "multiple quench cycles" and "chevron shaped banding in the ji 3/8" above the temper line" have a tendency to keep nasty situations like that to a minimum.
Everybody learns, from the most Senior ABS Master Smiths, to the total newbie, and this Forum is like a bar, workshop, knife show, living room and laboratory all in one place.
True, certain personalities stand out, shall we say, strongly, but overall, it IS pretty civil around here. We can be a little to free with our patience and knowledge sometimes, but I prefer that to INTOLERANCE and IMMATURITY.
I'm not ashamed to say that I have made some friends on the forums. I met Sheldon here about 3 or 4 years ago, trying to buy an Al Mar, and it turned out that we lived in the same town, same for Buddy S. Probably would never have met those guys if it was not for the Forums, and that is but a small example.
I don't think that I have made any enemies, but I do know that I have had some "spirited" disagreements with some of the Forum members. I think that is healthy, and has been a learning experience, allowing me to hone what I write, and how I write it. Sometimes I choose to be an ass, or the "**** in the punchbowl", but I am not the only one, and that gives me a feeling of community, even if it is a somewhat disfunctional one.
What we have on Bladeforums is a freakkin gift, that's what it is. And it's free. I upgraded my status to Gold to support the forums, AND to be able to sell knives. Probably the best $30.00 I ever spent, and I plan on continuing my membership, at this point, it is almost like a neccesity, like air.
I guess my point here, is that sometimes, we should just take a moment to appreciate what we have in the BladeForums, and continue to do what we do, contributing and taking what we need, and can, giving back when we can, too.
I see "other forums members" at shows, with name badges and all, and I like to think that we don't need that here, not that it is a bad thing. You are either hip to "it", and are an active family member, or you are not hip to "it", but you are still family, and you just don't know it. Like my friend Steve Dick says, "There's Knife People, and then there's the rest of the world".
