To custom collectors: do you also collect production?

I don't. I have a Sebenza as an EDC, but I'm more likely to adopt a custom as EDC than to put a production in my display case. What about you?

I have just about zero interest in production knives - the sole exception being my quasi-custom-sort-of-production Whitewing folder.

I like the Camillus OVB series a lot, but don't envision spending money on one.

Joss,

I collect production knives that I like or are of significance, historically. Also, those with an interesting blade lock.

Examples:
Spyderco, Viele, Lum, Police with Carbon Fiber, Police with G10
Benchmade: 710, Osborne Axis Lock
Kershaw: Trooper, some Speedsafe
Gerber, Silver Knights, Guardians

They are fun, and because I am associated with a distributor, I get them at wholesale cost.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

The only "collectable" production knife I have is a damascus wood inlay Sebenza and I love it. I regularly carry a plain Sebenza, BM 690 or MT mini-SOCOM though. The fixed blade I use most are customs (Andrew's, couple of Wheeler's and a Cutter) so I guess I agree with Joss, I would be more likely to use a custom than collect a production piece.

Since purchasing my first custom I have not bought another production model, but I still have the ones I had prior to this. Customs are available in all price brackets after a certain threshold, so I can satisfy most of my cravings there.

I have seen many a fine production collection, and there are some really fine production knives out there, but customs tend to fit my tastes better - forged blades and engraved tradional folders (..... sometime in the future).

My use and abuse fixed blade is a Lairson Personal Carry which I got off the forum at a very good price. I don't carry a folder as the ones I have are all lockable, but have a nice custom trapper on order that will become my pocket knife.

I went from collecting productions to customs, so I just ended up trading up with all my production knives. Now, I've got pretty much all high-end production, all users: William Henry's, two Kershaw Bumps, two Benchmade 940s (on standard, one NICA Limited Ti), Sebenza, CUDA Maxx, Boye Dendritic folder, and a couple Spydercos just for kicks.

Every once in a while if I really like a model.
I enjoy my Mnandi and a few antiques that I have lucked out on and also add some nice Doctor knives (Mostly antiques, Queen and S&M) and an occasional auto to carry now and then. I guess I average about 1 a year or so.

A couple of summers ago I picked up an 88 congress and a canoe (Both Case XX era 1940 to 1960) for little more than pocket change at a garage sale. Both knives were dead mint so I guess you could say my eyes are open. One of these days I'll sell them and use the return to buy a custom and I just might have to in order to meet some obligations at Blade this year. :D

Do I "Collect" them? I don't know what you'd call it. I just buy any knife that I like, factory or custom. Man, I got this knife addiction/sickness bad!

Yup all your fault. If it was not for you, I would not be totin' a Mnandi every once in a while :D. See ya in a few months

I only have a few production knives left in the collection, with autos being an exception. For the most part I have sold off my production knives, as they just don't do much for me. Then again I guess you couldn't really say I collect them, even customs, as I try to carry and use them as much as I can.

Most of the production knives that really appeal to me are custom designs anyway, so I feel I might as well go for the real deal. Production pieces are great for when you just want something to throw in the car, or whatever and just forget about it until needed.

The only interest I have in production knives is as users. I don't collect them at all. There are some Randalls, Blackjacks, EKs and old Marbles that interest me, so you never know what the future may hold.

No Interest in production knives I had a Sebenza replaced it with a Lochsa which I carry and use daily

I started with all Production knives then got bit by the custom bug a while back. I recently started selling any of the productions I don't like (mostly my crkt junkers, I kept one which is one of the Carsons) and then roll that money into a custom. I still have a bunch of Spydercos and Benchmades on shelves though. Every now and then I want to carry my BM 551 or Spyderco Native or Delica cause they really are nice knives but then end up leaving home with a custom anyway. ;) The last production knife purchase was a BM 940 cause it's a cool looking and pointy and a Strider GB cause I want something to beat the heck out of.
So I guess I collect both.

later,

Oily

In addition to forged bowies, I collect prototypes of neat production knives if I can find them..they appeal to me somewhat..also I really like folders with unusual locking mechanisms.

(FYI Steven, Sakai made a really neat thumb stud locking folder that was very inexpensive and high quality that was similar to the Lake/CRKT--I got it from Moteng..)

It just didn't appeal to me, mainly due to the materials used(or more accurately, how they were used), and the blade to handle ratio.

Collecting strange production locks started for me in 1984 with the acquisition of the Rolock(sp?) by Benchmark/Gerber, and just moved on from there. My last production piece was a Manix which I gave to a knifemaker at the Reno show. Great knife, too wide for comfortable IWB carry(my carry of choice).

I do custom and production knives.

When it comes to production models. . . .I'm into the high-enders. . .and mostly auto's and stuff that I can shove in my pocket.

There are some excellent production knives on the market, but it's the custom stuff that makes me weak at the knees. :D

no I have never saw a factory knife that was close to being worth the money. I collect ABS hunters only.

Isn't that just one beautiful knife Roger :)
I got one of those too... and I just love it. (It comes from a great stable of course).
