To get an RC-4 or RC-3?

I am about to buy my first fixed-blade, the RC-4 (I think). I'm still not sure if it's THE MOST versatile knife size, to be buying for my first. Without owning a small and large knife now (fixed blade), I feel that my only knife is tasked as a real "do-all" blade. For hiking and camping, it will most likely be accompanied by a SAK. I suspect that the RC-4 can do almost all of the delicate work that an RC-3 can do. Is that generally reasonable?

I was thinking that the RC-4 would have the advantage that it could handle bigger-blade duties MUCH better than the RC-3. What are your thoughts?

At this point, I cannot simply buy both.

I think you are right. The 4" blade gives you a little more versitility. Ithink the RC4 is the RIGHT size knife...period. The only reason I would prefer the 3 over the 4 is size to carry if that mattered...it doesn't to me.

If I was only going to have one fixed blade knife it would be the RC 4. If it was for EDC it would be the RC 3. I can't imagine only having 1 knife:( what a terrible thought .LOL. I can't even imagine having only one box of knives.:D

I do not understand this term "1 Knife" ... LOL !:D but I would go with the Orange & Green RC4 .

This will be his 2nd knife - as he has a sak. Paired up with a sak, which has a great little blade for fine work then the RC-4 is the best combo - no doubts about that in my mind.

To each his own, but in blades under 4", I prefer folders. I think the RC-4 is small enough for easy carry, but big enough to do some serious work. I'd go with the RC-4 over the RC-3, but that's just me. You can do a lot with a 3" blade and it is slightly more compact.

I like that :)

Just to be clear, this will be my first REAL fixed-blade knife, aside from a tiny Kabar TDI. I carry the TDI and a folding Benchmade daily. I have a small folder that is carried during rock climbing and a SAK for camping. A few of my knives were stolen a couple years ago, but that's about the extent of my "collection".

I am still considering other options, but I have had my eye on the RC-4 for a while.

Thanks for the advice. Any other input is welcome.

You cannot go wrong with the RC-4. It is excellent all around :)

If I could only take one knife (god forbid) with me into the woods, it would be my RC-4.

+1 again on the RC-4. Combine that with a Farmer (or OHT or New Ranger if you want something larger) and you're doing mighty fine.

For all-around, go in the woods utility, I would go with the orange-and-green RC-4. I use my RC-3 for EDC as it's just that little bit more compact. I never feel under-bladed with either, though.

For me the perfect knife combo for out doors use would be a serrated RC4 and an Izula for basic cutting tasks.

I find myself faced with the same dilemma! I think I am going to go with the RC-4 since I usually carry a folding knife as well.

That's pretty much what I'm looking for.

I want a knife that will be the single, essential blade to have. Yes, depending on one knife is always a compromise, but I need my most important knife-duties covered.

Thanks all!

I carry my RC-4 all the time with my Sebenza folder and leatherman wave
Id did great the last 2 weekends camping get the RC-4 you wont be
disappointed
